Peroxide doesn't hurt mycellium directly
    #7611252 - 11/08/07 01:35 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

But it may cause damage in the sense that the oxygen bubbles being created could tear the mycellium apart. I've used whole large bottles of peroxide on my mix of corncob spawn and fresh corncob substrate, letting it sit for about half an hour, then draining and pouring mix into pans probably 50+ times with no growth problems.

However, i could see spraying peroxide on the surface of already colonized mycellium during fruiting could cause damage because of the bubbles, but not because the peroxide is toxic.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

It's also wrong. Peroxide does stress mycelium a great deal. We all know that. That doesn't mean it can't survive limited exposure, but it causes damage at the cellular level and that's a fact.

OK, I agree that it stresses the mycellium and I can't vouch that my flushes could be better if I didn't use it.  But IME the spawn always recovers and colonizes fine.  Maybe if I had let the mix sit for a longer period of time the peroxide would eventually stress the mycellium to the point of death.

Sooo.. I don't recommend doing this unless you want to experiment

If you don't think H2O2 harms mycelium, perform this experiment:

Take a chunk of mycelium about the size of a jawbreaker, and put it in a solution of 9 parts water 1 part 3% H2O2. This will dilute the solution to 0.03% H2O2.

Leave it there for 2-3 hours and watch what happens.

I don't know that it actually KILLS the mycelium, but it certainly does dissolve it. Psilocybe Fanaticus mentions that the dissolved mycelium is still a viable culture. Either way, it does cause "harm", that is for sure.

Wait, I've actually seen people recommend that you add a small amount of peroxide to dunking water. From what's being said here, that'll dissolve all my cakes.
