Can I Please Get Some Input On This Casing? [PIC]
    #7615195 - 11/09/07 01:04 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

In case you can't tell, these fatties are African Transkei. Multispore to WBS, spawned to coir. This thing fruited before I could throw a casing layer on there so it's just fruiting off the sub.

These things are just growing soooo slow, and a lot of the caps just aren't really opening up. The ones that do open do so before the fruit can get very tall at all. Just a bunch of short, dense, slow growing fatties.

Is there anything I can do to speed things up a bit and maybe increase my fruit size?

Thanks =0)

Could you detail what environment you're growing in?

I'm assuming the lid its sitting on is the lid to an incubator?

Temps at roughly 77F no humidity gauge but water drips down the sides of the container. Yes that is the lid to its container. They get lots of attention...fanned 6 times through the day and misted when needed.

No humidifier or perlite...this container is staying pretty wet with the occasional misting.

edit: also gets fluorescent light 12 hours a day.

My guess would be that your humidy levels aren't high enough. Just a little low. Condensation is no messure of RH, rather it only shows without a doubt that the temp inside your tub is different then outside.

increase your humidy and don't mess with it so much!

I wonder why ppl aren't diligent enough with humidity levels.. Isn't it one of the most important factors that can make or break a cake? Specially after spending weeks incubating the damn thing, the least one could do is measure the RH and make sure to keep it on high 90's..

Thanks everyone, I'm going to go ahead and increase the humidity. I didn't realize it was so important!

Humidity is really important for fruiting, since mushrooms need alot of water

yeah. I would say its a light problem but you say you are giving it light so the fruits should be growing tword the light, or the FAE.

Humidity isn't as important when casing because that now becomes the casings layers job to provide the humidity... However.. when pinning without a casing... Humidity has to be 100%... or as close as you can get it.. Perlite and water with peroxide or a humidifier rigged to your FC with peroxide and distilled water...
Major factor.. Too bad you didn't case it in time.. that would have been monstrous

So humidity is more important with cakes??

Definitely... Cakes have no moisture layer (Casing) to obtain moisture from... That's why you keep the air almost saturated to feed these guys. You do not want to mist them directly... If you have any misting questions, I can help... but for sure. If it's in a cake state without casing... You need as close to 100% as possible.. Casings can thrive at 95%... but even those I like to keep at 100%.. It makes all the difference in yield and fruit size.

yeah some of those smaller pins already have black tops...

next time fix humidity. If it were a lack of light, they would be thin and stretching like crazy.

Doesnt look like to me like you can do much more about this flush... so dunk it! Rip off all the shryums and rehydrate that cake in some water, roll it in some casing and then chuck it back into the box - and this time buy a humidity gauge. Peace

I'd set that thing in a pan of water right now and just let it float for three or four hours. It's too dry. While it's soaking, you can put a few inches of rinsed, and then well drained perlite in the bottom of your fruiting tub.

Will do. I'm assuming I should pick the fruits first, right?

I wouldn't do that. Just do as RR said, plain and simple.
