Playing Banjo
    #7614452 - 11/09/07 10:28 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

So I've been trying to find a new hobby to spend my time on other than clicking on this goddamn computer and sleeping, and I think I've finally decided I want to learn to play a banjo.  Its funny though because a few years ago I would never have even considered playing banjo and would have laughed at anyone that told me they were going to.  But now I'm really excited about buying one and learning to play it.

I'm probably going to buy one in the $150-$250 range, just to start out, because knowing me I'll play it for about a month and then it'll sit in the closet forever.  Like my metal detector I bought last year (a White's Prism II) that I used TWICE and now its sitting in the corner with dust on it...

But who knows.  Maybe I'll stick with it and become known as Rip-V Skaggs!  :farmerdance:

Cool, but once you figure out the basics you'll definately have to find some friends to jam with. That is the best way to really learn how to play is to jam with others.

I've played guitar and bass ever since I can remember. But I've always wanted to learn the mandolin also.

I've got a banjo that you can buy off me once you get good.

It's from 5 time world champion raymond faichild, widely regarded as the greatest of all time.

Only 400 were made, 200 silver, 200 gold. Hit me up if your interseted

Oh yeah, if your wondering anything else, i've been playing since i was 6, feel free to pm.

nice! pick it up and play brotha'!

i did the same thing last november. i saw a String Cheese Incident DVD (live at the filmore) with Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky thunder. After watching the 3-song bluegrass section I decided I would buy a mandolin and learn it.

next day i went out and picked up a cheap $150 one. I am now quite proficient with it, play in a band, and absolutely LOVE it.

the mandolin proves quite usefull for when my band jams out some dead tunes - I <3 playing Jerry

i already played guitar but after watching some scruggs video on youtube, i got mentally addicted to playing a banjo, so i went and picked a cheap one up.

but i soon learned there is so much more to learn on guitar still and it's been lying in the corner

i think i'm going to give it to a friend so i can jam with someone.

Yeah alot of my good friends are pretty good guitar players, but not many of them are really into bluegrass. They said they would like to jam if i really do get to playing though. I can't wait to start! I get paid today, and might go looking around for one in Memphis tomorrow before work. Hopefully I'll find something I like!

just pick up a nice beginner's one for $150 or so, the bassist in my band did that a while back so we can bust out some bluegrass, but unfortunately he's a lazy piece of shit so he never learned.

whatever you do - be sure to STICK TO IT, you'll regret it if you don't learn. and you'll alwyas be so glad you did once you're good.

i feel you, i did the same thing with a mandolin. Im also like you and the damn thing has been sitting unused for a couple of months now, i even lost all the damn callouses i worked so hard to build up hehe. I never really got that good at it, but, you can't get good practicing only a few mins a day. I picked it up last night and it was so out of tune i didn't feel like bothering with it. Maybe one of these days ill get off my ass and get back to it.

I have the "lazy peice of shit" syndrome with alot of things but I'm pretty confident this is something I'll stick with. (I wasn't on amphetamine when I came up with this idea, like I was when I came up with most of my others)

Yeah I know I can get good at it if I just stick with it. I started playing sax when I was in 6th grade I believe, and when I was a sophomore in high school my jazz band went to florida for a competition and I won first place jazz soloist. The next year I was homeschooled though and started playing less and less. I took it out of its dusty case about a month ago and started playing on it and was amazed at how much I had forgotten. Shame too, its a $2,000 saxophone, but I plan on keeping it and playing it again someday, just not "feeling" the sax thing at this point in my life though.

man, that's funny, i played sax all the way up until highschool.  I was always first chair in the orchestra and played the majority of the solos and lead parts in our jazz bands.  Sadly i went to a highschool with no music program and soon found other things that interested me and since then my sax has sat in it's case.

Meams- I have to get my mano repaired before i can play it properly again.  The little plastic piece at the top of the neck that holds the string lost a corner so my first string isn't taut any more and gets in the way.  Hard to justify repairing a 50 dollar instrument when you dont have money for food

it really is, mandolins produce some of the most beautiful sounds and i wish i could play as fast as a lot of the people i watch/listen to can. Problem with me is im so fucking uncoordinated with the damn pick and if you try to play it with your fingers you lose that sharp tone the instrument produces. It just doesnt sound the same, but, its the only way ive been able to teach myself how to move up and down the neck. Id sit and learn a tune using my hands to pluck the strings and then try to teach myself how to play the same tune with a pick. I still can't play the songs as fast as i can with hands when i use a pick.

i had 8 years of fundamental guitar lessons before i picked up a mandolin, so my hands can do as they please. i've been developing my mind lately. my hands play what my mind thinks, naturally. i am currently develoipng my creativity so i don't get stuck in the same playing styles over and over

yah, i played a little bass when i was 13 or so, but then again you use your hands on the bass so i never really used a pick with that either

Oh well, soon as i get some time and money i suppose ill pick it up again.

The most pickin' experience I have is with a rubberband-shoebox geetar, so this should be interesting learning to pick at a banjo.
