Only 10% of the brain may be active at a given time.  The area(s) which is/are activated will vary depending upon the type of activity in which one is engaged. More neural activity than this would be evidence of a seizure, not enhanced intelligence.

Im pretty sure this is not what was intended when this phrase was made up.

It was not "made up," it was a misunderstanding of neurological research.  When the first studies of brain activity showed that no more than 10% of the brain is active at one time, the public (derrrr...what?) took that to mean that we use only 10% of our brain.

Wow!  Imagine what amazing powers we would have if we started using the other 90%!  We might even be able to read and comprehend scientific research!

Have neurologists looked at a brain under the influence of psychedelics? I'm not saying it would necessarily use more than 10%, but I've heard about how certain connections in the brain take place in such a state that wouldn't take place otherwise.

Could you point me to a study that says we only use 10% of our brain at a time?

I don't buy it.

What do you mean by "active"? The brain (ALL parts of it) are always "active" in one sense or another. All of the older parts of the brain have to be active all the time or you would die.

Do you mean only the thinking part of our brain? We only use 10% at a time of that?

So which is the "thinking" part of our brain?

I don't know.  If they have, I have not read any reports of such.   My understanding is that psychedelics change the manner in which the brain is active, and not necessarily the amount of activity.  Interestingly enough, the brain actually shows less activity when one is performing a task one is highly skilled in, indicating that efficiency is the neural hallmark of mastery.

As someone who spends much of his professional life pondering how the brain works, I am quite prepared to admit the enormity of what we do not yet understand about how this kilo-and-a-half of grey matter manages to produce thoughts, feelings, and actions. None the less, I am at a loss to understand how my informants came to know with such pontifical certainty that we normally use only 10% of it. To the best of my knowledge, this alleged "fact" appears nowhere in the literature of neurophysiology or physiological psychology. On the contrary, it is at variance with most of what we do know about the brain...

Check out the pdf for an in-depth explanation of why "the 10% myth" is one of the most widely repeated myths.

It is a myth that we use only 10% of our brains, even "only 10% at a time".

Its like saying, "You only use 10% of your arm."

Its a pretty funny statement, actually.

Maybe only 10% of the brain is dedicated to conscious thought. That doesn't mean it's the only 10% we "use."

I'm not sure though, I've heard this before, it does sound like straight BS.

No, this claim must be true because humans always interpret and measure things accurately and understand everything they observe clearly.

The 10% myth has been around for a long time. It is not certain how this falsehood began, but it has been strengthened over the past century by misinterpretations of neuroscience discoveries and unsubstantiated quotes by both scientists and laypeople alike.

The truth is that we use virtually all of our brain every day.

Let’s say, for example, that as you are reading this article, you are eating a sandwich. As you are reading, the frontal lobes in your cerebral cortex are engaged in thinking and reasoning. You are enjoying your delicious sandwich thanks to your parietal lobes, which are responsible for taste, texture and smell of food. The occipital lobes help to process how you see the words on this page, and the temporal lobes help you process what you hear—like the crunch of your sandwich and the rustle of the page.

Meanwhile, you just blinked because of your motor area, and it is because of your cerebellum that you are able to hold the sandwich in your hand, as well as anything else you’re doing right now that calls for balance and coordination—like sitting.

Without having to think about it, you are breathing, digesting your sandwich and circulating blood thanks to your brainstem. Your metabolism and hormonal functions like the ones that control the water and sugar levels in your body are currently being controlled by your pituitary gland. And if you are sitting outside on a park bench on a cold wintry day, your hypothalamus is responsible for that fact that you are shivering.

You’ll remember what you’re reading due to your hippocampus, whose job it is to transfer short-term to long-term memory. It also enables you to remember that the point of this elaborate example is that you use much more than 10% of your brain.
