I understand how a cake has "x" amount of energy to produce fruit. If the fruit are picked when younger and smaller as opposed to more mature and huge, will the cake still produce the same approximate weight of fruit? (I.E. 10-6 gram fruit v.s. 30-2 gram fruits.) If the overall weight yield is close to the same...is it not wiser to harvest smaller, more potent fruit v.s. larger, weaker fruit.
Or is there and extra loss of energy in creating a new fruit v.s. continuing to grow an established fruit?
Thanks-

I dont think it works like that, if u pick it early its not going to allow for more pins to develope, u may free up some nuitrients that the big one was taking, but i doubt that mean a few more shrooms will grow.
I think picking when the veil is about to break is considered when the shrooms are at there most potency.

I was thinking about this too, but with another approach. I have two "cakes", they are about 12x12x4cm (WxBxH). If I were to cut one of these in half making two 12x12x2cm and case these. Would they produce the same amount in weight that the one 12x12x4, but smaller shrooms? Or would I just get as big shrooms as the 12x12x4 but less of them?

bmy - check out the 'Sea of Shrooms' tek in growth methods...it basically says that yes, splitting the cake is beneficial if you case it.
I've been thinking of spawning to coir then covering the top of the colonised coir with aluminum foil, except for a 1" diameter hole in the middle of it. Theoretically this should be the only area to pin...and the mycelium network would deliver all nutrients to the 'shroom(s) in this spot...giving one hell of a 'shroom!
Anyone else think this is worth a try, just for kicks?

Remember, when it comes to growing mushrooms, Its not the shape, its not the size, its how many shrooms you get to rise...

More than likely you'd end up with a rats nest of spaghetti looking, squirrelly assed fruits coming from all edges of the casing and sneaking out like tendrils to find the fresh-air coming from that single hole... Search the archives for "high CO2" levels and/or "thin curly fruits" and you'll find a plethora of posts on the matter.
