PESA casing new questions plz look!
    #7612776 - 11/08/07 08:47 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

My Pesa csaing is doing quite well. It has been around a week since the last flush and I am starting to get new pins and a nice size shroom has been growing first and fast. Heres a pic of the shroom and a few pins;

Let see, also today I took a brazilian print and made three syringes with it and also scraped some of it into a pint grain jar.
I took a Amazon grain jar that I had like 2 inches of colonized grain in and transfered to 3 new pint grain jars and made a small casing with the rest of it I had left. I made the casing with a 50/50 mix in a 6x6in ziplock plastic container, don't worry i covered the sides with foil to make it opaque.

Hmm.. oh yeah also I have birthed my first two half pint South African cakes and placed them into the FC a few days ago. Should I be misting the cakes directly?

Also I have some half pint Chitwan that are around 50% colonized. They were stalled at my old apartment but have been making forward progess since I moved them to my new spot.

I started just putting my jars in priority mail boxes and placing them on top of my minifridge. Its 82.2F right now and keeps em right where I want em.

Ohh yeah finally, I forgot I started messing with agar plates, I have been using tryptic soy agar plates and have gotten myc growth started from multispore innouclations on 2 strains. I can't wait to start slicing some nice ryhzomorphic mycelium out of them and isolating some genomes for future grows.

Thanks Shroomery for everything! Mycology kicks ass.

Re: PESA Update! (pic) [Re: katfish]
    #7634161 - 11/14/07 09:15 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I harvested 22 shrooms in the first flush on my PESA casing, then the week or two after that a total of 6 shrooms came up 1 at first , which is in the picture above and then a patch of 3 and then 2. So 6 more total after the 22 first ones.

I am now starting to think that the 6 were the end of my first flush and I just didn't realize it.
I was anxiously wating on my 2nd flush to come. Well I think yesterday it started to hit! I had 11 new fat pins pop up overnight in one of the corners. They are all growing and looking strong. And then this morning I noticed 2 new fat pins about an inch apart comming from the center of the casing!

I don't know if i triggered this but my casing was looking pretty purple cause of all the spores that got dropped on it. Really purple in one of the corners of the baking pan, so I decided since there were no pins in that corner I was gonna put some of my 50/50 caing mix which consists of Verm, worm castings, and some manure. PM me and I will tell you where I got it from (ebay). The morning after I put a thin layer on the corner, 11 new fat pins popped out of that corner!

What do you think??

here are some pics!

General FC setup.

Here is a pic of the first flsuh growing.

This is 8.6 grams wet after drying for 2 days in newspaper. My friend and his buddy split this for his bday and both tripped. I was suprised they both tripped off of that little. It was 6 shrooms in all.

This is a pic of the whole first flush, minus a few shrooms that got eaten or didn't end up in the pic cause they were drying, this is almost all the 22 that I mention above.

I know, I know  shitty cell phone pics, but I just found out I can send 750 pics from it a month so i started sending pics!

Lemme know what ya think.

awesome grow. I can't wait until i get to use some bulk substrate.

I am actually ordering some of the same hpoo/straw mix that u used from mycopath.

Is that stuff awesome or what?
Your fruit size tells me all i gotta know, i am going straight to mycopath in the morning!

well my consistent fruit size and timing has a lot to do with the isolate, not the substrate. don't get me wrong though, mycopath has really good stuff.

Thanks pyshco

Pretty good for a first timer. I took a pint WBS jar and made that casing with it. I was gonna just let the cake go in the FC but i figured fuck it so I jumped right into casing.

I am waiting on getting some bulk substrate, I have 6 half pints of SA fully colonized, its time to SPAWN. Can I use just straw for bulk? I probably can get my hands on some, and I thought pasturizing was a hard task and you needed a PC to do it. Not true, oven works fine

I have 2 SA cakes and one Chitwan that were in the FC for 9 days. I took them out and dunked them in a ziplock,  the only problem is I forgot to separate the strains, i don't know which cake is which they are all in the same ziplock. I guess i will be able to tell from the fruits eventually.

straw has a tendency to contam easily so you may want to reconsider spawning solely to straw. oven pasteurization also isn't that great, the air doesn't transfer heat well and it can take a long time to get the core temperature of the substrate where you want it. it is easier to pasteurize in water by bagging your substrate, putting it in a styrofoam cooler and submersing it in 170ish degree water for a couple hours, you can find specifics using the search function. also, you won't be able to tell the strain from the fruits really, they are both cubes and with a multispore inoculation you'll have wide genetic diversity anyway. except perhaps with the PF Albino or Penis Envy strains, the strain name is just marketing.

Here are some more pics from what i picked off the cake this morning.

I have about 10 more decent pins, and hopefully more on the way.
After this flush I am definitely gonna dunk and cold shock the whole casing in the sink for a few hours to ensure a good pinset. (i hope)

i just picked three of the ones that were broken veils, i was out of town since saturday morning and just got back, one of the shrooms was 12.9 grams that has been my biggest one to date.

The only other mushies that are growing are three along the back, but there are no other pins or anything. Should I just wait for more pins? or mist it down good or what?

I picked all the remaining ones. I don't really see any other pins forming at all. Could this be the end of my casing?

It has suffient water content in it so I think dunking is out of the question, the casing material was a little dry so I misted the whole thing down.

How many weeks should I wait for pins before I trash the casing?
