Rotten? Hawaii.

I cant tell if they have rotted yet. They were picked tuesday morning. We tripped on them later that night. They were good, but we forgot the rest of the shrooms were in our pockets in plastic bags. At the end of the trip we realized they got beaten up quite a bit. If anything im just going to make tea out of it. Can you tell me for sure if these are rotten? Spore prints are black
These are field shrooms. Smells like shrooms still sorta, kind of picking up a dead fish smell now too.

Possibly some form of copelandia. They were really good though. 2 days isnt enough for them to rot right? They were in a relatively airtight plastic bag. I think they just look nasty cause they got smashed in our pockets. How would i know for sure if they are rotten?

my guess would have been copelandia cyanescens, can see reminants of a whitish cap in the pic and some decent blueing...
2 days in an airtight bag is the worst place in the world to keep them, 2 days is plently enough time for mushrooms to start rotting... they could just be mushed from being in your pocket, its hard to say from the pics... back to the old saying "if in doubt, chuck them out"
i suppose u could brew them up

Not unless you know that they are edible. Just throw those out. They are definitely rotten.

If they get you high I don't think being rotten would matter too much. Two days may be enough for it to start to decompose, but it's not enough for anything serious to have grown I think. We have all probably eaten rotting mushrooms at some point in our lives.
Just eat it now, and it should be fine.

I LOVE that advice! Pure Genius!
I especially like the part about being High when you figure out how rotten they were... having already eaten them... LOVE IT!

Those ARE ROTTEN. No ifs, ands, or buts. Next time you go picking, you need to store the fresh mushrooms in a paper bag, or inside a napkin that is inside of a plastic bag, so that excess water does not spoil the mushrooms. And they MUST be kept in the refrigerator if you are planning on keeping them more than a day. Otherwise, cut your losses, and just dry them- but when they are fresh!
Even boiling them and making tea is likely to give you food poisoning. That rank fishy smell is a dead give away that they have gone bad, and are NOT salvageable.
Be smart, not desperate.

It is kind of like taking a bite out of a rotten apple. You know right away it is gross so you spit it all out.
The same thing would happen if you decided to eat those shrooms.
Like CC said, don't be so desperate. Just go find some more and use better collection techniques.

Do you have any idea how many times you have eaten things that were "rotten" and then cooked and you ate them? A LOT I'm sure. Our mothers do it. We do it. Resturaunts do it. Just because they are smooshed and even decomposed a little does not mean they are going to make you throw up.
Each to his own. I've been noticing a lot of people around here seem to really have weak stomaches. I would have eaten the mushrooms. I have been trained in food service, fifo, and food safety, and I know how fast food can go bad. Ever had those little white mushrooms in your fridge that start to get bruised up and soften, and then you put them on your pizza? That's "rotting" too.

Jonathan, that was terribly ill informed.
Eating rotten food that has been cooked can definitely cause food poisoning.
Also, there are degrees of decomposition. If the mushrooms smelled a little strong and looked a little bit old, they would perhaps still be in good enough condition to eat. These mushrooms are half goo-rot and smell like dead fish. True, sometimes people cook with less than fresh foods, however, if you cooked with mushrooms this rotten, they would taste very very bad, and potentially make you sick.
I too have worked in the food industry. I was a chef for 3 yrs, and even the restaurant i left, partially because I don't believe in making food for others that i would not eat myself, would have NEVER used anything that disgusting.
The only suitable place for those is the garbage.

Not after only two days. Not even if it was sitting in the hot sun. And that's my final word on this trivial matter.

Why even ask for advice if you're just going to disregard it? Seems redundant to me.

I already personal messaged him asking if he wanted me to mail a couple items of rotten leftover food I have laying around.. but he declined my offer for some reason.
I dunno, he seemed like a real wizard in the kitchen if he knows how to make good use of rotten food like that..
lol jonathan reminds me of the Seinfeld episode when Frank Castanza tells Kramer the story about how he poisoned his whole platoon with rotten steaks. "I figured if I could use just the right amount of seasoning nobody would know the difference."
