my thoughts on food

a friend of mine brought me pickerel fillets
told me "they dont even taste like fish"
and i thought, what should it taste like? what does fish normally taste like?
many times i have eaten foods with added spices and flavors that taste just like those spices and flavors... but they do not taste like that food
i approach the flavor of food unbiased
as a result i waste less food (i eat everything i make) but i am careful what ingredients i use and how much
i choose the ingredients to maintain pure uncontaminated flavors, never from a recipe
for example, this morning i ate oatmeal and fresh pineapple

also i should mention this
certain things augment flavor or compliment it
for example, black pepper and some cooking oils add an extra flavor but do not drown out the pure flavor of the food
but if you add curry powder or dill the pure flavor will be changed

oatmeal and lentils are my staple while i'm poor. I actually grew some and have the hay in the kitchen. I started that after reading Isaiah. "A little hay in the soup for roughage" I thought. And then I read the White king eating hay in 'Alice thru the looking glass'. Lentil hay has a mildly pungent aroma but I can't say the oat hay adds any flavor and it has to be cut so fine. Lentils are a good nitrogen fixer and cover-crop in the garden. Last spring the crop planted before the late freeze did best, because of the extra moisture I think. I don't know if they would over-winter like oats. My peacocks would eat them anyway.
The deer are so thick around here they eat the onions overwintering in the garden. The only new saplings in the forest are pine trees because the deer don't eat them. The old-timers say the deer are so thick because people no longer have to depend on them for food. Turkeys also used to be almost extinct but are getting quite common.

How about putting things in the appropriate forums. Do you think anything that stumbles across your mind is something worth discussing here?

I too generally prefer rather simple foods. For the most part I view eating as nutrition. I would prefer not having to eat, really. It's a nuisance just like any other bodily function like having to use the bathroom.
I like to keep the food pure, simple, and nutritious. Breakfast of plain oatmeal with some fruit and nuts thrown in it. Egg white patty with some cheese on bread for lunch. Stir fried veggies with rice for dinner. Simple simple.
Lighten up Icey! I can see how one's view towards food can be considered philosophy, albeit a personal philosophy.

Food and it's ingredients are like an orchestra. You must learn to conduct it well, so the smaller pieces are not lost in the din of the louder pieces.
Tamarind, ginger, chilli, bhang, cumin, coriander, all of these go well together when you know how.

Well I'm so glad that you can see that, but that doesn't change the fact that it doesn't belong here. According to your criteria for philosophy anything in the Pub or OTD would belong here. I would prefer not to encourage that.

Why should it be? I do have lots of leisure time. I'm one of the lucky/skillful ones and that was a statement of fact as I see it. So tell me please, what's your point?

Hey dude what just happened to your ratings?
And so as to keep this thread on topic I will await your PM as that's where this belongs. If you dare that is.
