tub size?
    #7609106 - 11/07/07 10:06 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I've been looking around for the correct spawn->substrate ratios and i believe i've decided on 1->4

i have 9 nearly full pint jars full of rye berries, so like 2.2-2.4quarts of spawn
i'm gonna be using cpoo/straw/verm for substrate and i would like 3-4 inches of substrate

i'm not a math wizz, so my question is what size tub should i use? i was thinking an 18 gallon rubbermaid, but some of the things i've read have made me question whether 18gs might be a little large for only 2.4quarts of spawn

i've isolated a very strong ecuador clone on BRF-substitute agar that has been performing exceptionally well
all 9 jars are within a few days of full colinization after a week with a single point inoculation (agar wedge)

randomly, if you need 9 quarts of spawn then you'll need to prepare inoculate 12 jars to get it because you never want to fill up the jars more than 75% (50% if they're going to receive grains on a grain-2-grain transfer) full...to allow room for growth and to make shaking easier.

Keep in mind that inoculating or whatever in front of a flow hood won't help your bad substrate, your bad inoculant, your bad sterile procedure, etc. etc. etc. It's not a +3 flowhood of magic, it's just a tool.

well i filled each jar up to the line just below the rim of the lid with rye berries because i made alot more than i intended to
leaving about an inch of space between the rye and the lid, just barely enough to shake them up

i shook them a few times during the growth process because of the small innoc point, it worked out well since the isolate is so vigorous

i unfortunately don't have a good pc'r so i can't PC anything more than 3 pint jars at a time (if i get the bulk going well then that'll change xD)

i think you meant 9 pints though

don't overfil, an inch is not enough on qts, 2/3s to 3/4s full at most. With G2G I advise even less.

as i said i didn't intend to make so much rye, but i knew it would work with the isolate, so i went with it and now i have nearly fully colonized jars with 0% contamination (knock on wood)

that's not the question though guys,
what i need to know is what size tub should i use to obtain 4inches of substrate with 2.4quarts of spawn using a 1->4 spawn->substrate ratio
