Presumably all similar planetary life forms will have a number of similar barriers to survival as intelligence evolves:
- limited resources/growing population - evironmental harm from use of primitive technology - threat presented by discovery of nuclear weapons - emerging disease in a large, connected population - genetic manipulation - nanotechnology (grey goo problem) - quantuum experiments? think micro black hole that doesn't evaporate
And of course, cometary extinction or the like before they escape the planet in sufficient numbers to survive off-planet indefinitely.
I think we can survive global warming, post peak-oil etc. but much pain may come from these events as they unfold. I do worry about the oceans though - I believe a collapse of the food chain there could happen and that would have catastrophic results. Regardless, I am not so sure we are looking at the shit hitting the fan, so much as the shit hitting the fan taken in high-speed photography viewed at slow speed. A long, shitty downward spiral as the planet blackens . . .
However, if we don't lose all we have learned, once the population is stable and smaller we will be able to change course and usher in a new age. Either that or we ALL die, becuase our current path has only one outcome.

i was talking with my brother about this...
its hard to make a survival cache out in the middle of nowhere when i can't drive and can barely afford orange juice.
theoretically speaking assuming we could get a decent store of food set up in a remote area (that we had access to) the question i thought was most interesting is:
at one point would we decide that it was defintely time to leave and go to our hiding spot in the woods.
we kind of tentatively agreed that the first signs of food shortages would be a good time to high tail it out of any civilized place.

ive got a decent stash of dried and canned foods, im an avid outdoorsman and survivalist anyway, so i alreay have many of the tools and resources i would need ready in the event of some sort of catastrophe or any event where i would have to survive in the wilderness. i am very confident i can survive just fine no matter what happens. the hardest part will be deciding what time will be the best to dip out. too early and you risk running out of supplies sooner, too late and you may not get out of the city.
im not too worried about starvation, in the event my food runs out im pretty experienced at finding food in the wild. the only thing that none of us can really prepare for is if a meteor or something happens that would block out the sun for extended periods. staying warm wont be the problem, itll be finding enough food after all of the phototropic plants die off. some of us could still survive, but we wont be all that healthy with no sunlight and fresh plants to live off of. we will have to resort to eating bugs, algae and things that can survive in little to no light.
