im thinking of growing a peyote, as a sort of "project".
i know they take about 5 years to flower, is this when they start producing mescaline? or am i being incredibly stupid.
also, how much do peyote seeds go for? or is it advisable to grow from a cutting?
thanks, haymaker

peyote seeds are quite expensive, cheapest source i know of sells 100 seeds for £7.50, could be cheaper if u know someone who has lots of plants that produce seed of course
they should be of flowering maturity in about 5 years when grown from seed, depending on growth conditions of course
as for mescaline production, the older the better... i guess young specimens will produce mescaline, but their size means that u would have to eat many...

trichocereus are a much better and more sustainable source for mescaline as they grow faster.

why not gorw em? they are great cacti. seeds are pretty pricey, but very variable, just search around on the net. like uare said, maturity will depend on your growing conditions.

sometimes as much as 3x. but then again when they are 15 feet tall they have WAAAY more. another thing to think about is a Trich can produce at least a dose per year. and if you do plan on eating them Trichs arent endangered. they are also legal to grow I love my Trich collection

the chemical makeup of Lophophora and trichocereus is very different, not just the mesc when it comes to peyote.

If you grow peyote, you can graft it to increase the growth rate. But that usually means less alkaloid production, so the best bet is to grow for a year from seed, graft onto a trich you just pillaged for a trip, leave it for another year, then cut it off and let it regrow it's root system and produce some alkaloids. This will take at least another year. It's still a drawn out process though.
If you cut the cactus just above ground level new pups will form around the root you leave in the ground. Or you can turn the root upside down and graft it onto another trichocereus and it will grow pups.

no. peyote has around 50 different alkaloids as well as higher levels of mescaline than any trichocereus.

an important addition to this statement: dont forget that the cactus will need aeroles to pup from.

dunno, don;t think it has been studied in depth until now. as far as i know they are still researching that (Lophophora genus). people say diffusa has little mesc, but i am not sure.
