Staw Lime Bath

I am going to experiment a bit with the lime bath tek for straw. I normally put the straw in a pillow case. Bring the pot of my big pressure cooker to about 160-170. Stabilize the temperature and drop the straw in for an hour, then drain overnight. I've done a bit of searching and all I could come up with as far as the lime bath goes, is soaking the straw in a big tub with so much lime. Does anyone have any experience with using the limebath with straw? Could I put about a cup of hydrated lime in the pressure cooker water and pasteurize the straw with it? Any information is helpful so I can get to work and see what variations I can come up with.

I have done timothy hay grows with the lime soak and gotten successful flushes with out any heat pasteurization. Suggested that you use hot water for the soak though. Ultimately results from straw are weaker than I'd like. It is a good addition to bulk poo and coir.

I've had fairly good results with straw. AFOAF's last grow was penis envy and he got 6 ounces from one flush.
Would it hurt if I added about a cup or less of lime to the straw while im pasteurizing it? I do not plan on soaking the straw.

Don't use lime anywhere near your pressure cooker. It's highly caustic and will pit the aluminium. Use a plastic tub. RR

What he said, i never put anything other than h2o, myco bags, jars, syringes, agar and related tools. Never anything chemical or foreign to the process.

So do you think I would be better off just pasteurizing it regularly like normal?

I'm using straight straw for substrate. Spawning two wbs grain jars to it.

I'd use lime and heat together. Just don't use your PC. Use a plastic tote. RR

This is one of my old posts, but I had a question. I have a pot that I use only for pasteurization. Will it be alright to put lime in it anyway? I know that it will make pits in it after time. But I don't use the pot for anything but pasteurizing. Would one cup of lime be sufficient for a pillowcase full of straw? Or should I just skip out on the lime like I normally do?

Yea, 1 cup of lime should be plenty for a pillowcase. If the pot is aluminum, the lime will eat through it pretty fast, but it's your stuff, so you make the call. It's easy to boil the water in one pot and then pour it into a plastic tote or bucket with the lime. That way, you don't ruin the kettle. RR

It just seems like there would be a problem keeping the temperature right. The pot method always worked well for me. It's the bottom of an old pressure cooker. I don't have the lid anymore. The only thing i've ever used it for is pasteurizing straw. I've got 5 quart jars of colonized cambodian wbs. I'm trying to figure out if I should do one big 45 gallon tub and a few small pans, or if I should try and stretch it to do 8 pants to fill up a 4-tier greenhouse. What would you guys suggest? Also, I have a brick of coir. I've never used coir as a substrate. Only straw. Should I mix it? Or just use straw? I also decided against using lime this time. I don't want to fuck anything up.

I don't think I have ever seen a pc that wasn't aluminum. Plastic totes/buckets work well especially if you have a lid! If you use your pc with lime it won't last long and you'll ultimatly have to use the tote!

A couple 24x36 Mesh laundry bags in a large tote with a couple blankets is fail safe. Once you get the straw in the water and the temp dialed in, it's good to go. Just pull out the bags and hang them to drain when the time is up. Metal garbage cans work too, but I fear their fate would be similar to your pot, if used with lime.
