I am a packrat.
    #7606635 - 11/07/07 11:53 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I'm cleaning out my life and it's full of clutter. EVERYWHERE. I keep everything... old jewelery, old clothes that I don't wear, old notes and letters, old birthday cards, old toys. I have boxes inside boxes, I have broken things that I have fully intended to repair and now they are long forgotten, but stored. I even keep old make up until it's completely expired.

I even have a folder for old emails that I haven't read since I originally received them. I don't bother deleting my PMs EVER....just in case.

There is so much junk in my life I can't even think straight. I'm like one of those crazy people on those TLC shows with entire rooms full of crap they've hoarded for no reason other then 'one day I might need it!'

So I am cleaning up. Emails, pms, boxes crates and closets. I'm going to have a giant yard sale in the spring and make some serious cash. Then I am going to spend it on strawberry daquaris on the beach in Belize.

Parting with all my shit it hard. Even when I'm cleaning up junk, I still look for excuses to keep everything I come across.

Are there any other packrats out there? Aren't you sick of the clutter?

a good rule of thumb....if its not holiday or special occasion oriented and you dont touch it for 2 months....pitch it.
this used to be a problem for me....but not anymore.

I'm a packrat in fits and starts. I don't hold on to anything for crazy long. But I'll accumulate a year's worth of crap and then have a really satisfying day of putting it all in trash bags and tossing it out into the street.

Yeah I'm a packrat.

No, I don't mind being one!

Because, you know, I could need them someday, perhaps

Yeah those collectible Japanese paperclips you ordered from that late night infomercial could wind up being the key to destroying the zombie invasion!!

Exactly. You never know when society is going to collapse and you can't get any new slinkys or broken cd players... I figure this crap is better off in boxes in my house than in some landfill. :smirk:

Is that the one that takes 3 days and 8 tonnes of oil to produce the perfect bookmark?

I have a fair bit of clutter but it's only because I don't go through my stuff very often. I love to throw things out; I believe everything you throw out makes you stronger. The fewer possessions you have, the more you get out of the ones you keep.

Clutter in your home creates clutter in your mind. It really does.

I have seen some really bad cases of packratosis. My ex-gf's mother was insane. They had a double garage, completely full of JUNK. Pure junk. Broken flowerpots, dolls with missing limbs, coffee cans... eck. Like the leftovers from a thousand garage sales. God I wanted to burn it all. Saving junk is an act of cowardice. Let go! Let go! Feel the power!

I should post pictures of my bedroom... Just box after box of useless shit I can't throw away. At least I finally put most of it in boxes.

i'm a total packrat as well. i like projects, so i'll start them all the time. but then i get distracted, don't finish, and just set them off to the side. every piece of junk i have has a potential use in some unforeseen project in the future. i can't bring myself to throw anything out that's not simple trash.

*raises hand*

i hold onto lots of stuff.. though, I lost a good bit of my old carry-arounds last year when i went to jail... necessary purging by the lady.

big fan of holding onto flyers/posters/pictures/random papers/etc/etc... trying to curb that habit, since cross-country moving seems inevitable...

I tend to save silly reciepts for things, then they pile up on my dresser under my wallet. Then, I have no idea whats important or not.

I have fucking reciepts that are so old the ink is faded... why? I have no idea.

me too!

i usually just put receipts in my coat pocket and forget about them.  earlier today when i pulled out my heavier coat, i found like 2 dozen faded receipts in my pocket.  the majority of them were just from buying lunch.

oh pack rat should be my middle name. for me its i could use this later on. i'm super organizational but i just have so much of everything.

i dont have enough room for my books, magazines, printed books offline on my three bookshelves. i do a lot of knitting and other crafts so i have a box of paper, boxes of paints, soldering irons etc. i do black and white photography so i have a huge rubber maid tin of cameras, devloping things, film pictures. my mushies, seeds, herbs, sewing machine too much fabric, yarn.. the list goes on and on... but i dont feel like this is 'crap' ya know. i think i need to narrow down the number of projects that i do.. i dunno. i keep receipts and old bills and everything... but i had to do something about it. i got one of those hanging file boxes and put my papers in there.

I still have about 15 boxes of books that were my mother's. She died 15 yrs ago. I have toted these books cross country twice and have never had the space to display them. Occasionally I go through a box or two and imagine the library I'll have one day.

Guess you could call me a pack rat too.

I used an AIM mod to automatically log conversations with everybody I spoke to. It organized them by folder, with the folders' names being the screennames of people I communicated with. I had over 4 gigabytes of pure text conversations (no images at all). I don't know why I kept them. It would have probably taken years to read all of them, and I never planned on doing that.

They came in handy, though. I caught people lying a number of times, by being able to cite their exact words saying otherwise weeks, or months prior. It was also interesting to see how people's opinions changed about certain things over the years.

About three months ago, I deleted every one of the logs by mistake while I was backing up all of my files onto an external USB harddrive. Almost six years of conversation, gone in an instant. I wasn't upset in the least. I was surprised I wasn't upset. I felt kind of relieved, actually. There was a lot of personal information about myself scattered throughout them to certain people I'd confided in over time, and incriminating evidence against other people I could have easily used to get them into legal trouble if they pissed me off (not an exaggeration).

I wasn't paranoid about people reading the logs or anything, though it would have certainly given the cops a lot to read if I ever had to get my computer searched for whatever reason. It felt kind of refreshing to have everything 'wiped off the record' so to speak.
