Freeloaders on my casing layer...

You might have already read about these in my previous post "The cutest thing I've ever seen" but ten hours later they matured a good deal more and it's pretty apparent that they're some kind of coprinopsis although I can't yet positively confirm if they're actual ink-caps (coprinopsis atramentaria) or some other similar coprinopsis such as coprinopsis disseminatus... I don't have the eye to distinguish them properly.
I don't think you could call them a "contaminate" per sae beacuse they're not parasitic on the mycelium of my cultivated species and they're not really competing for resources either. They're just freeloading off some random bit of nutritious material they found on the tip of the casing material. They're kind of just freeloading off the more than ideal environmental conditions they've lucked out on...
Initial Discovery: 2007-11-06 @ 22:00hr

Ten Hours Later: 2007-11-07 @ 08:00hr

Random Trivia: The coprinopsis atramentaria got it's name as the "ink cap" because it's spores and decaying gills were actually used to make black ink for quill pens back in the 1800's. The fruits are harvested while they're relatively young and very fresh and then strained through a coarse mesh such as cheese cloth and then the filtered liquid is then combined with gum arabic (to form a suspension) as well as some kind of fragrant oil such as clove oil to mask it's rather unpleasant smell and further aid in creating a free-flowing suspension for the ink.
They're not poisonous but they also bear the nickname "Trippler's Bane" because if you ingest them and then, anytime in the next 72 hours have even a moderately small amount of alcohol you'll experience, literally, the worst hangover of your life...
Quote:
wikipedia states: Toxicity Consumed with alcohol, Coprinopsis atramentaria is toxic. Symptoms include facial reddening, nausea, vomiting, malaise agitation and palpitations and arise 20 minutes to 2 hours after consumption. The fungus contains coprine, which blocks the action of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, allowing the buildup of acetaldehyde in the body. Acetaldehyde is an intermediate metabolite of ethanol and is responsible for most symptoms of a hangover.
Although very unpleasant, the syndrome has not been associated with any fatalities. The symptoms can occur if even a small amount of alcohol is consumed up to 3 days after eating the mushrooms and continue for over a week.

Yea, it was the most handy item I could use that is easily recognizable "standard" for comparison...
I think I've mentioned before but my fruiting chamber (greenhouse) is in my garage. Sterility need only be a primary concern during inoculation of your spawn / agar mediums. Once you've secured their environment, you can incubate anywhere and once it's time to fruit your best defense against contaminates is how much fresh air exchange you can provide...
not that has anything to do with your question, lol...
