Laptops

I need a laptop for school but, I don't know what to get. I want something cheep but good. Apparently I can get a discount from Dell for going to ITT so that ups my price range a bit. I hear about $40 off each payment so that pretty sweet. So basically, what are some good laptops.

You can get a used laptop that will run anything but modern games for only a few hundred bucks on ebay. I have a PIII that runs everything I need (including Maple and MatLab), it costs about a hundred on ebay.

Taking out a loan on something that depreciates madly is foolish imo.

Dell has payment plans though. I was looking around and they were giving monthly rates instead of prices. Plus my school will take something like 12% off, if I go through Dell.

$200 rebates, or $200 off. Cause if its just $200 off then why even post the price $200 more than the $200 off price.....if that makes sense.

But anyways I'm not really too concerned with price. I'm just looking for names of good laptops, preferably from Dell.

dell usually has good customer support and warranties, but they are usually a tad more expensive than others. sony is usually the most expesive out of the mainstream, while acer is usually the cheapest.

i recomend the middle-of-the-road. i have a $1000 laptop from HP. they are usually media-oriented and their laptops dont feel cheap. you can get some in the 600-800 range that are decent enough.

i dont recomend buying from acer. they have alot of hardware problems from my experience, and they just feel cheap.

in spite of this, if you are going to buy a computer, make it worth the money. usually a mid-range laptop will need raplacing in about 20 months. if you spend a little extra now and go for a higher end (alienware, or even mac) it will save you money in the future.

and macs tend to keep their value rather nicely.

its all up to you and what you can afford vs what you want.

I agree. People almost toss aside perfectly good laptops just because they are a year or two old. If its really for school, then you won't need very much computing power. 100-200 dollars would get you a good laptop on ebay. As a bonus, when you spill beer on it and ruin it, you won't feel 1000 dollars bad, you'll just feel 200 dollars bad.

You say you'll get 200 dollars off or 12 percent off of a dell. But you'll be spending 600-1000 dollars to get that 200 dollars off. That doesn't make any economic sense.

You said you want something cheap but good. Then you said price doesn't matter. Which is it?

Are they the objects you really value? If they are not, you are cheating yourself. I don't meant that if you chose to pursue the objects you most value, you will attain them; of course not. Your experience will tell you that. But success in getting after much labor what you really don't care for is the bitterest and most ridiculous failure." -George Santayana

I used to sell/repair laptops and I hate Dells overall. However, I got to ITT as well and the models I have seen them get people are very nice and rarely have problems. Id say go with the Dell with the payment plans that ITT can get. Its better than over paying an absurd upfront price.

Money does mater but I have a good idea of which company has the cheapest laptop but I don't know which one to get. I'm looking for specific models.

I've been looking around the dell site and been looking at different hardware choices and I don't know what will give me the best buy.

honestly, the best deals are always at Best Buy / Circuit City... as much as I dislike buying stuff from either of them.

If it's something you just need to do regular things, watch movies, play some games (not at the highest settings) and etc. you can get a pretty good duo-core with 2gm ram and 200gb memory for around $1000. The same exact laptop from the manufacturer's site (dell.com, gateway.com, etc.) is usually $500 or so more.

I got a fantastic IBM on ebay for half of what I would have got at any mass-sale depot, or even factory direct.

You can find some at BestBuy or buy.com. There are many for you to choose.
If you want to buy one just for school, I recommend Compaq Presario C714NR. It is Dual Core 15.4 inch, 1GB. I find that a recent deal for it is only $500 instead of $600.
