Flat or Round?
    #7605433 - 11/07/07 12:46 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Do you believe in the spherical-world conspiracy or trust your own senses and believe it is flat?
The world is...
You may choose only one

I think it would make a lot more sense if the world was kind of carrot-shaped. But then again, who am I to argue with Thomas Friedman?

It's flat. I read it on a the internet! :yesnod:

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Quote:

All things being equal, the simplest explanation tends to be the right one.

-Gravity-

Round Earth explanation: Gravity is a force with a completely unknown mechanism that somehow pulls two objects with mass together. This is achieved both with relativity which bends space-time, and some how also with a subatomic particle called the graviton, a theoretical "virtual" particle that mediates the force of gravity. Why such a particle would be necessary is unknown if mass bends space-time, but quantum mechanics predicts that it exists.

Flat Earth explanation: The earth and the universe are propelled upwards by dark energy.

-Space Flights-

Round Earth explanation: There is no conspiracy. We are really able to build these fantastic spaceships that are able to pull themselves out of the earth's atmosphere and land flawlessly on the moon. We are able to create amazing space suits that protect "astronauts" from the harsh conditions of space. With no launching equipment on the moon we are still able to flawlessly take off from the moon and return to earth. We can pinpoint the exact path an unmanned spacecraft must take to safely land on Mars. We are able to launch satellites into a geosynchronous orbit. We can build fantastically large telescopes, send them into space, and take distant pictures with that.

FLat Earth explanation: There is a conspiracy and we can't really do all those things.

Actually, the Earth is neither flat, nor a spheroid (circle), nor an ellipsoid (oval).

Earth is actually referred to as a "geodetic" shape. Earth's shape looks circular from far away, but upon real inspection it is actually a rather irregular surface. The northern hemisphere of Earth is actually slightly crunched in -- due to the fact the majority of landmasses lie here. The density differences causes the upper portion to bulge inwards, and the lower hemisphere to bulge outwards. Earth might be better understood as a really round teardrop, getting more narrow towards the top, and more bulbous towards the bottom.

The Greeks would have been sorely disappointed by this, because they believed the heavens (space) were composed of perfect spheres -- the highest stage of evolution of matter.

Stand in the desert or plains and you can see that the earth is round.

Yes indeed, you can figure out that the earth is not flat by experiments of your own without going into space

The Bible says Jesus ascended to heaven. How could he ascend if there's no true up or down?

In a flat earth theory it would seem that a person travelling would go on infinitely or is there drop off point, hmmm.. may be a drop into space, that would be the ultimate suicide location.

It seems obvious to me. Up is away from the center of the planet, and down is towards the center of the planet.
