My first attempt at WBS, did I mess up?

I just spent 2 days washing, rinsing, and cleaning the shit out of some WBS, then I simmered it for 20 minutes, washed/rinsed it again and let it drain for another 20 minutes. Then I had to leave the house immediately and I stuck the grains in the fridge wrapped in plastic. They were in there for about 4 hours. I came home and I put them into the pint jars and Pced them for an hour. A few of the jars have grains in them that seem gooey and they stick together in a big clump like a ball of dough. Is this a problem? I tried shaking the ever living shit out of those jars and the clump did break up some but it kept sticking back together when I put the jar down.

ALL of my jars that have the gooey grains in them take forever to colonize. some get bacteria infections too. maybe its just a coinsidence

Shit man, I spent like 2 hours washing and rinsing it too because I wanted to make sure I did it right.

I think the gooey stuff that's in there is starch. I may be wrong though.
Starch inhibits growth, obviously, and it should've been washed off in a strainer.
Follow Doc's Wild Bird Seed Tek to a T and you'll get results.

Did you do another rinse after you took them out of the fridge? Also what Tek did you follow?

That's the tek I followed but the holes in my strainer were too big and the seeds would have fallen through them, so I lined it with coffee filters. I washed the grains and poured off the top murky layers of water (starch) about 10 times. Damn it, I hope this works
EDIT: No I did not rinse them off again, maybe I should have.. Should I bother inoculating these or should I just start over?

I think it should be alright. SWIM does WBS and that's happened a few times. They do seem to colonize slower but they've never really had a problem with contams at that stage. After doing the overnight soak what color was your water?
edit:sorry, didn't see your last post. thought you had rinsed them again. if you haven't knocked them up yet I would just start over and do it again. It really is better to be safe than sorry. BELIEVE ME

Well only time will tell I guess.
You should work on getting one of those metal mesh strainers, they don't let any seeds fall through; they work perfectly.

Should I take my seeds out, rinse them again, then PC the jars again or do I need to start with new seeds? The water was not red like in the Tek, It was pretty much clear after that 12 hour bath.

PCing them again might over cook them and turn them to mush.
Are you using LC or multispore syringe?

I was planning to use a syringe, just one type of spore in there though. I read your post in another thread recommending the use of LC and I am now starting to consider going that route. How long will these grain jars be viable for inoculation? Also is there a good LC tek that includes methods of use once the LC is complete? Thanks

Honestly, I would completely start over. It's better to ensure you are in good standings to begin with. Two days now compared to 3-4 weeks later is much better.

I will place my vote on "start over"
It might be a little annoying now, but it's just going to be a worry-fest for the next month, not knowing whether it went right. And if something goes wrong you won't wonder whether it was the seed preperation.
Also this made me giggle

Multispore just means it was made from a genetically diverse spore print, as all spore prints are.

And please do move to the lc's. Incubate for about 2 wks, then refrigerate, for me still good after a year. So much quicker than multi spore straight to the substrate. By the time multi spore starts showing you could have had complete colonization using an active lc.

I agree with this, a 24 hour soak has always hydrated seed more than enough for me, simmering/boiling brought catastrophe every time. Maybe not catastrophe, but it really seems unnecessary in my experience.

I had the same problem, it comes from not being fully drained. I added some verm to soak up the excess water.

I emptied all the jars, cleaned them, and bought new bird seed (the pentington brand) and redid the jars. I didn't simmer this time, and I let them soak for about 23 hours, after PCing them for an hour, there was no clumping whatsoever. The neighborhood birds also got to feast on 12 pints of mushy seeds.
