Taking a trip to Jamaica! (need help)
    #7602934 - 11/06/07 02:26 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Hey guys!

This year I am going to buy a pretty present for my pretty lady. A whole paid trip to a resort in Jamaica! We're both big fans of Ska and Reggae music and wanted to visit it's home country. I've looked around for information about tourism or activities related to reggae we could do outside the resort and found this site:
http://www.jamaicaway.com/BDT/Sight3a.htm
EDIT: I can't join the website's owner thru email, so if anyone have a site that propose good looking tours of jamaica, just tell me! Thanks!
I didn't get much info yet but the website looks pretty weird, and I was wondering if it was a ripoff or anything like that. We'd love to take the Bob Marley Tour and the Culture Tour to go and dance to some good reggae.

The thing is that we are both pretty young (18), french (we can both talk english pretty easily, we just don't have the accent) and also white. I've heard Jamaica was filled with crime and that most of the natives didn't like the tourists... So is there any risks going there (even if we are with the tour guide)?

I was also wondering how easy it was to get pot. I've heard a lot about cops trying to sell pot to tourists right out of the plane and stuff... also a lot of pretty bad stories about people stuck in jail because of cannabis use. Should I be worried? What should I do to get marijuana?

I'll never thank you enough for your help! Any tips are welcomed as we are both adventuring oruselves in an unknown country! Thanks!

I've been to a sandals resort in Jamaica and it was probably one of the best times I've ever had. We didn't really traverse around Jamaica much on our own, but the resort did have quite a few brochures on tour things to go on. We went on an upriver trek that was about a mile. It cost about 20 bucks each and at the end they cooked us up some jerk chicken which was delicious. The river was out in the jungle and had lots of small waterfalls and clear water.. it was pretty bad ass. My step-brother and his wife went there and paid some guy to give them a tour, he ended up driving them up an alley that lead into the jungle and then robbed them with a gun I believe.

So yeah I would be pretty careful and skeptical if I were you. But hell the resort was so fucking bad ass we didn't even really want to leave. All sorts of delicious already paid for food around, paid for drinks from the bars, and the beautiful beach. Damn it was bad ass! I really do want to go back, but I doubt I would really be going into town and shit like that. Some sketchy ass shit goes down thats for sure.

Their roads suck big time though. It was about a 2 hour drive from the airport to the resort and my God it seemed more like 10. Bumpy fucking dirt roads it was ridiculous.

Thanks for the answer. You just made me even more nervous haha! I really have to find some tour on the web. The website I just mentioned seems to be closed since I can't join the owner.
I wish I could find something ''natural'', with natives guiding the tours instead of jamaica experts y'know. I'd really love to visit Nine Miles (Bob Marley's hometown) and to be guided to some dancefloors of any sort.

Can anyone give me more tips? I'll do my search but if any of you can help, it would be appreciated!

A friend of mine once went to Jamaica (right after September 11) and they were hurting for tourists at that point. He said that when he stepped outside the resorts, people were practically handing him drugs. He said that he had to flush some pot down the toliet before he left because he ended up having so much. (It wasn't easy, he cried the whole time he was flushing it..)

went to jamaica on a cruise and it was my least favorite place, stinky ass rastas walking up to you asking to braid your hair and take you on a tour. But, the shopping was cool once we got to a place that stinky rastas were not aloud to be. If your gonna go anywhere dominican republic is awesome. But im not deciding your trip. I wouldnt reccomend walking around by yourself or with your woman, as it has a very high crime rate.

That's pretty fun to hear. If I can't get any on the resort I'll try getting some while on tour in Nine Miles or Kingston..

I know that, and it is why I am looking for an organized tour. I'd really love to visit the country and dance to some reggae with the natives. I don't plan on going there alone, and I do want to stay at my resort at least 5 of the 7 days. I found some sites giving the bob marley tour, but nothing about dancehalls or any reggae related fun.

weed is easy to get....if your in a resort...flag down a younger guy tending the pool or something. for about 15 US dollars you can get 14 grams or so of some really good weed.
Ive always stayed in the all inclusive resorts....going into town has just been depressing and not all that fun.
The WEST side of the island ( negril ) parties harder than the rest of the island. I stayed in ocho rios once and the resort i was at was dead and you could hear crickets by 9pm.
Have fun....jamaica is a tons of fun.
Teds one stop shop in negril served mushroom daquiris and mushroom omlettes made to order....

Dont worry about the crime part. I've been traveling all over the world alone and with friends and has so far had no major trouble. Its just down to being unlucky and at the Wong place at the wrong time.

I've been alone in some pretty fucking poor and seedy areas drunk as fuck and walked away thinking nothing of it despite all the numerous warnings. Then i hear about this guy walking in for directions for like 5 minutes getting robbed.

Maybe its because i never wear jewelry or anything and don't generally dress like a tourist.

To be honest sometimes when i think back i realize i had probably acted foolish and it scares me a little. But hey, adventure is what its all about am i right?

Just leave the watch and your i love Jamaica t-shirt at the hotel before visiting the seedier parts of town.

Just too bad I can't do the same with my skin color and accent hah!
Just kidding. But really if there is any simple way of going downtown from the resort, I might give it a try. I'll just ask some people already going how safe it is. Just to make sure, heh.

Hey man that river walk was guided by natives, in fact when we showed up they were tokin it up, one guy was telling the other to put it out lol. While we were going up the river there were this little jamaican kids jumping off cliffs into the water and this was like out in the middle of nowhere.

It's funny that he mentions negril because thats where we stayed, and damn it was sick. I've also heard that Ted secretly serves lucy at the one stop shop too, but I'm not sure how reliable that is.

Heres some useful links I dug up..

http://www.toursofjamaica.com/tour.htm

That last one has a Bob Marley tour too..

Just go man, dont let other peoples tales scare you away. You always get to hear about that one guy that got robbed but never about the thousands that dont get robbed every day.

Yeah that doesn't change the fact that shit does happen though. I don't think anybody is trying to scare him out of going, but it's nice to be aware of shit that can possibly happen. Also like that one link says I definitely wouldn't recommend you trying to drive anywhere on your own. Talk about a disaster waiting to happen for probably most any outsider that would try that down there.

Yeah its just that some ten years ago i took my first trip to Thailand and back then it was a bit more wild west than today and i was scared shitless by all the stories i heard. People told me not to go there and to this and that. Never raise your voice or argue with a Thai man or you will get fucked. (this is somewhat true though but i digress) The locals know we are scared as fuck to and will play on it. Fuck i had a prostitute telling me that i should take her along to show me around town because it was so dangerous. I almost let it ruin fun until i wised up to the bullshit.

Ever wonder why some many people get fucked with the bar tab scam? Its because they have been told to shut up and pay up. There are literally thousands of bars that live solely on fucking tourists over.

I dunno what im getting at really. I guess its just that personally i know just how much paranoia can ruin my fun.

Thanks for the links! I just read somewhere that you could register to different tours directly from the hotel/resort? I'll have to seek for information!

I'll do my best to get to negril but I am planning buying Late Tickets to save a bit of cash. So if I just can't get anywhere else than Montego Bay, I won't have the chance to go there! I wish I could tho, looks amazing.

I read Negril is the one spot to party in Jamaica, but it is also pretty expensive (almost twice Montego's resorts). Is it really that better? Has any of you heard about the difference between the two?

I want to have a good time, but I won't have more than 2,000$CAN to spend on the tickets. And about 300$ for the rest (tours/shopping/ganja).

For a free way to travel and stay with cool locals (or expats) check out my sig. I have been hosting people from all over the world for a couple years and have had nothing but good experiences. I have also surfed couches in Amsterdam and Montreal and had nothing but good times!

PS All inclusive resorts are the Wal-mart of tourism. Check out the documentary Life and Debt. It's mostly about the IMF and how they make Jamaica (and other poor countries) their bitch, but there's also a fair bit of material in there about the resort industry and it's shittyness.

I was looking for something more private with my girl y'know. I know the resorts don't represent the culture and that's why I want to take tours...
