Choosing a pressure cooker
    #760114 - 07/19/02 07:41 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Hi,

When considering purchasing a pressure cooker I have come up with several variables and would like some opinions from those who have experience or know someone who does in working with them. My categories follow, but if you think of something that I missed please include it.

Brand - do some brands work better, have less problems than others?

Cost - big difference here

Type of seal - gasket vs. solid aluminum is one better than another? Is the solid aluminum worth the extra cost for not having to worry about gaskets?

Size - tiny 6 quart up to ~40 quart, does size matter If you have a small one, do you wish you had a bigger one, is some size too big, what size do you like, what size do you need if you wish to put quart jars in it, should you get the biggest you can afford?

Thank you for your help,

Sincerely,

reite

Okay, good post...

The best quality PC is an All American. They're very well constructed and one of the few with a pressure guage.

As far as I know, all PC's have some type of gasket, so that's not an issue.

Definately BIGGER IS BETTER!!

I have a 6 quart Presto and every time I use it I WISH it were at least 3 times the size.

RE: "Cost - big difference here"....

To put it bruntly: If you consider yourself poor- Dont buy the All American brand- out off all of the models that I have seen the new ones are like over $100 (USA). PC's that have a fixed pressure of 12 psi have been reported to work as well as ones that go 15 psi. (15 psi is often reported as beeing needed due to the PF Tek) - Many here report that very inexpensive fixed 12 psi gauge type PCs (less than $30) from Wallmart (c) can work fine for small personal experiments.

I have a 20.8L/22quart Mirro (same company as All American, but Mirro's are the budget brand). Does the job for me and has automagic 5/10/15lb pressure settings.

Cost me about US$100 brand new.

>all PC's have some type of gasket

The All American doesn?t have a gasket really, both the pot and the lid fit so tight, that they form a seal.

i had a feeling that might be the case after looking at pictures of 'em, but I heard someone say the used vaseline instead of vegetable oil on the gasket of one so I was unsure.

I stand corrected!

Thanks Anno!

Never use vegetable oil on your gasket, it will destroy it!

I have one of the bigger ones from All American paid a little over $ 130 for it after financing ( came from Fingerhut catalog ). I only bought it to help establish my credit and it sat on my shelf for ten years or so. When I started groing shroomies about 3 months ago I took it down of the shelf and dusted it off and shouted "Hallelujia!". The lord works in mysterious ways. I like it fine. I can stack two rows of quart jars in it. No auto settings, but that is ok and no gasket either. You do have to coat it with vaseline where the top and bottom come together, but that's no big deal.

Okay, now I have to correct you

Vegetable oil does not hurt rubber. Petroleum products do.

Oh, it does, it, does.

You are confusing rubber for latex(condoms)....

Anno is right. I use petroleum jelly on rubber O-rings for chemistry equipment without issue

So you're saying vegetable oil won't harm latex, but will harm the tires on your car?

You're saying vaseline will destroy a condom but not the tires on your car?

I might be willing to take your word for the fact that vegetable oil harms rubber the same way vaseline does - if that's what you mean.

>So you're saying vegetable oil won't harm latex, but will harm the tires on your car?
I don?t know about latex, but it will harm the tires, yes.

>You're saying vaseline will destroy a condom but not the tires on your car?
Yes.

A quote and a link on this subject:

"While most manufacturers recommend using mineral oil, or vegetable oil to lubricate gaskets, Vaseline might be a better choice. Especially after exposure to heat, vegetable oils will start to "dry" and turn into a varnish. First they get sticky, then eventually they harden like shellac. This could cause the gasket to stick to the lid and the rim and tear when it is separated, or crack later in storage." I concur with this assessment.

Testing shows vegetable oil does indeed bond the rubber seal to the canner lid so you might consider lubricating with petroleum jelly (aka Vaseline). Vaseline will not impart any flavor or odor to foods and is safe to use, after all we use it on babies, so this might help extend the life of your gaskets."

From http://missvickie.com/library/care-gasket.html .

I tried the thing with the gasket myself(before I knew it?s not good....)

I got a 8 quart mirro pc from walmart for only 40 bucks. Its not the baddest kind of pc but it works just fine. It can hold 4 quart jars, 5 pint jars, 10 half pint jars. Its really easy to use too.

that 8 quart souns like a good way to avoid having one of those big 22 quart ones this was my consideration when i was getting mine the cost was half for the smaller one but i ended up getting a six quart from walmart brand 'presto'
mine works great but i can't fit a whole quart jar into it and i can only fit three pint jars which is ok but that 8 qt sounds like a happy medium but if you got room and money your saved effort will be well worth getting the 22 qt or something big.

All American pressure cookers are the way to go.

I like the older ones.....they have a guage and a pressure relief valve.
The newer ones have one of those rocker weights.... I can't stand them.

I suggest buying one on Ebay....if you want a good deal on one.

If you can deal with a cheapy..... check some local thrift stores if you have any.
