Effects of air pockets under casing layer

Hey everyone,
I just want to say what a great community this is. I know it is typically not recommended to case BRF cakes, but based on certain circumstances it makes sense to do so. If one decides to break the cakes up into nuggets (rather than slicing) and place them in a tray, it is apparent that there is a lot of space between them. So, is it desirable, undesirable, or neither to cover the top of the nuggets with the casing mixture and simply leave the "air pockets" unfilled?
This may be obvious but I feel there may be both pros and cons...
Thanks for the help.

I would suggest mixing some additional substrate with your crumbled cakes as evenly as possible, cover with foil, and incubate for another 3-4 days without messing with it.
Then add a light casing layer and fruit.

...no, not really. People crumble and case all the time.
You should crumble them well, rather that aiming for "nuggets". A substrate with wads interconnected at few points is not going to be able to provide nutrients well. Crumble down so that it can be repacked; the mycelium will recover in a few days and you can case them.
