Question on Perlite fruiting chamber
    #7601691 - 11/06/07 08:56 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

In a Fruiting chamber with perlite for humidification and 1/4 inch holes on all six sides produce enough humidification for pf cakes? Or will going with what the Perlite Humidification FAQ says for the best results.

A terrarium set up as such will provide more than enough humidification for pf-styled cakes provided you use 4-6" of well rinsed (and drained) perlite on the bottom of the terrarium.

You'll still need to supplement with the occasional, fine misting (with a pump-pressurized mister, not a "squirt bottle") and fanning but the perlite will be more than enough for the ambient humidity required to "feed" the moisture to the pins as they mature. The fanning is a requirement of the misting, after misting I always recommend you fan heavily as it will help "push off" any water droplets that have formed on the pins themselves as those can cause aborts.

The terrarium's design works off convection (hot air rising) so it's important that you support the terrarium off the surface with little "legs" to allow the air to flow freely underneath as well as using cookie-racks or something similar to support the cakes/trays above the perlite so that they're not prevent air from flowing up through the perlite in those areas either.

Take a close look at the image below to see what i mean...

fine misting with a squirt bottle will cause contamination?

The size of the water droplets released from your standard quirt bottle are too large and will create water droplets on the heads of your pins which can promote aborts. It's not essential, but you'll definitely get better results and the pump-pressurized spray bottles are only $10-15 USD in most garden sections...

Here, check this out...it's a great read.
