My basic grain soak recipe looks like this...
(Rinse the grains several times) I use 4x more water than rye grains with 4-8 fluid ounces of regular strength coffee added to that water along with a tablespoon of garden gypsum. Soak 24 hours and then finish by simmering at a very low rolling boil for 10-15 minutes before draining.
Coffee gives the grains a little extra nutrient boost for colonization. No magic, no real reason to do it, but it's a reproduceable little tweak to the standard recipe. I'm more willing to omit the coffee than the garden gypsum when it comes down too it but since there's always a hot pot of coffee going in my house, it's never been an issue.

Just dump in a cup of black coffee with your grains once you've cleaned them, let them soak soaking your grains in coffee works great, failure was on either the pc cycle or the inoculation but coffee itself was never there problem.
