Only someone like RR, I know my cooler jars have less contams than my warmer ones and take about the same time.

If their growing faster around 83, then leave it there, but anywhere from 74-84 is acceptable.

The definite answer to your question is that there is no definite answer. If that makes sense. There are tons of variables that will affect the optimal temperature. These include: - The specific heat capacity of your jars. You can't really quantify this aspect(unless you have access to a calorimeter). Some jars will be able to hold more heat w/o raising the temperature, therefore the optimal temp will be a bit higher(85 C for example). However, if the SHC of the jars is lower, the inside temperature will be higher, therefore you will have to provide a lower temperature(81C for example). - The type of substrate you use will also play a role in optimal temp. (again, different SHC)
You really have to experiment with your temperatures to find your optimum. For you, it seems that 81- 83 C is working really well. I suggest that you either keep it at that level, or raise the temperature by a miniscule amount until you find a number that works.

just remember as temp goes up yes colonization speed increases, but so does likeliness that CT's will germinate

That's not to say that anything above 86F will speed up colonization.. 86 is as high as you would want to go, but I think 80-83 is closer to the sweetspot.

I keep my jars in the low to mid 70's (aka room temperature). Incubating jars at a warmer temperature increases the risk of contamination and requires additional space and electricity for an incubator. I have not noticed any noticeable increases in colonization speeds when employing temperatures in the 80's. For me, there simply is no reason why I would want to incubate at anything higher than room temperature.

It's a trick question. 82(F) is their ideal *internal* temperature during colonization which is _NOT_ the same as the ambient temperatures.
Mycelium generates it's own heat as it colonizes and will raise the temperature several degrees depending on what it's colonizing. A jar of grains might only be a couple degrees higher but a tray of your favorite bulk substrate (especially manures) can be as much as 5-10(F) warmer internally. The reason this is a big deal is because any temperature over 82(F) actually harms/stresses the mycelium and it begins to colonize much++ more slowly.
So, yea, 82(F) is the right temperature in the center of the spawn medium / substrate but depending on if that several quarts of manure or a jar of grains you'll have to keep the ambient temperatures of the room between 68-78(F). Rather than trying meet the ideal temperature which is a rather fine-line, I just keep things at the lower end of the spectrum and only colonize in the 68-72(F) range.
---- There's another issue to consider in the whole equation as well. Temperatures above 78(F)+ degrees quickly approach the ideal colonization temperatures for many bacterial contaminations...contaminations that might have never been able consolidate control to your jar if the temperatures would have been kept much lower...

Don't mistake my tone for a "matter-of-fact" attitude. I'm just presenting what I believe to be correct, until I'm corrected... - How Myco-Curious Prepares Coir & Compost Substrates - How Myco-Curious Builds A Bulk Humidifier - How Myco-Curious Builds An Automated Greenhouse ------------------------------------ figgusfiddus said: Keep in mind that inoculating or whatever in front of a flow hood won't help your bad substrate, your bad inoculant, your bad sterile procedure, etc. etc. etc. It's not a +3 flowhood of magic, it's just a tool.
