tossing cakes outside?
    #7599729 - 11/05/07 06:53 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I have 5 cakes ( brf jars )that contamed pretty bad with a green mold, I've read posts where people say put it outside and it may come back next season etc.
-Does this method still apply when you have cold winters?
-If I did this now (drops below freezing at night) could it come back in the spring/fall?
-Also I read some people say it's okay to eat contamed shrooms, should I reconsider tossing them?

Thanks for responses.

Make an outside patch, The MYC can fight the contams off when there outside.

They won't come back next spring, so just toss them to get rid of em. Nobody is going to recommend eating 'contamed' shrooms, whatever that means. Molds on a substrate don't render the fruits from that substrate inedible, provided the fruits are healthy.

I burn anything that contaminates. I soak it in gas, chuck it in my fire pit out back and drop in a match.

Smashing the jars into a large fire would be soothing seeing as I have to start over now! F*ck.

Yes, they are a tropic/subtropic species that is not frost tolerant.  They'll go dormant at low temperatures but the minute they freeze, they're done for.  I throw used substrates and contamination into my compost piles when the time comes and I _have_ seen fruits poking through every once in a blue moon after freezes but that's only because the center of an active compost pile is between 140-160(F) degrees and it probably kept the mycelium warm enough in the pile to prevent the frost from killing it off.

Which is not what I had intended when I sent them off to be recycled...

if you realy want them to come back next year, collect up a butload of spores and sprinkel em all over your patch... or inject them into your patch..

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

Only thing I've ever composted was LEGAL organic material, thank you very much. It's a COMPOST pile, not an EVIDENCE pile.

even though it was a little bit of a jump to get to that conclusion regarding which species to which I was referring, I definitely don't disagree.

I however was referring to an incident regarding Pleurotus tuberregium (The King Tuber Oyster) while testing it's ability to colonize a redwood-chip & coco-coir substrate.  Didn't do too well after about three months and instead of wisely extracting the sclerotia I just threw the whole damn thing into my compost piles only to find, about a month later, the entire right side of my pile fruiting.

I was worried that I'd never kill (pasteurize through the composting process) all of the sclerotia in the pile and it would end up all over my property when I went to distribute the compost into my gardens.
