Talking to children about drugs?

There's always that age when kids seem to take an interest in drugs and begin asking questions about them. Then there's some who will sneak behind their parent's back and will try them (which most of us probably did).
What's the best way to approach things when this starts to happen? Two of my cousins are reaching this age, and all I can think of are the general things most people say such as "You are not old enough to worry about that yet", "Childhood IS drugs", "Wait until you are old enough to even consider these things", "Your brain isn't fully developed yet, don't fuck with it"... But hearing these things certainly didn't satisfy my curiosity.

Comb through the experience reports on Erowid and print them out some that you feel convey an accurate message. Believe me, they'll actually be interested in reading real experiences and forming their own opinion, rather than just being thrown a bunch of facts.

usually when I talk to kids about drugs I like to start by saying "pssst, kid, you lookin' to score a dime?"
sometimes it satisfies their curiosity

When I have children, I plan to be as honest as possible about drugs. I'll tell them of how they've benefited me, as well as the trouble they've gotten me into. I'll tell them the concerns I have about them doing drugs, and then leave it up to them, with the implicit understanding that they can be equally open and honest with me.

I don't know. The whole trip report thing (which I did independantly) made me want to try drugs even more.
The goal should be to get them to stay away at least until they are 16 if not older.

But why not?
Is it really okay to let children get intoxicated? Wouldn't it mess with their growing minds? Would they be able to understand it? Appreciate it?
I could never hand my little half sister a few tabs of blotter. Maybe it's western society conditioning me, but I just could never do it.

I disagree. 16 is an arbitrary age, and people mature at different rates. I was 15 when I started toking, and I knew other people who started sooner. None of them have developed serious drug habits as far as I know. The goal should be to get kids to make intelligent decisions and understand the consequences of their actions. The best way to do that is to educate them and tell them the whole truth.

Yes.

Seeing as how LSD isn't harmful to the brain, I wouldn't just jump the gun and assume it's harmful to growing minds.
