Anybody know what fire fang is?? There is a little bit of white shit in my Hpoo. It doesn't smell like mold. In fact is kinda smalls like myc.
If it is mold will the pasteurization kill it? 2 hrs at 170F? I don't know but my 7 jars are now fully colonized and I don't want to ruin it. I think that if it is mold my Myc might just kill it anyway. Maybe not. Any suggestions?

Actinomycetis. It will also grow on coffee grinds if you store them for any length of time. RR

I have heard that the presence of firefang in moderate quantity assists in the development of cube mycellium. Any truth here?

Actinomytes are the aerobic, thermophilic bacteria that are responsible for active/hot composting and produce internal temperatures in the 140-160(F) which, incidentally is the same temperature range pasteurization takes place.
They're considered "beneficial" bacteria because their presence in your substrate can assist in keeping other, potentially more pathogenic, forms of bacteria at bay by exerting their dominance. They also are thought to help stimulate pinning in the mycelium although I really don't know how that is personally. I'll have to rumroll: use the search functionality... lol.

Worth while read http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/4532477#Post4532477
As mycocurious has noted fire fang plays an important role in composting. I highly recommend anyone who has a little space, free time and motivation to start a small compost pile next spring (straw is usually more commonly available this time of year tho.) A good mushroom compost mixture can be as simple as 1 part horse manure and 1 part shredded straw with 5% gypsum added. Of course there are many many more recipes available by simple search.
Something I have not seen mentioned very often in the forums is that a compost pile shrinks easily to 2/3 it's size due to the decomposing process. Yet its texture remains quite loose when done right. This means you can get far more substrate into your substrate trays and get the most out of the space in your green house or tubs.
