I enlisted into the Army Reserve this weekend. I have been planning on it for awhile and now that it's happened I'm pretty excited. I am shipping off to Basic January 9th.

Anyone on the Shroomery ever been in or is in the military?

I actually wouldn't mind getting deployed and seeing some combat. I'm not infantry so it doesn't really seem likely that I'd be on the front lines, but you never know.

My friends who actually saw action and came back are a bit fucked in the head. Not necessarily on a daily basis, but certain things trigger actions and ideas from the military that they instilled in them.

Like saying the word "kill" more than 10 times a day, everyday.

In the end, you are just going to be a peon for the governments plans. Weather or not you ed up risking your life.

On the other hand, its what you want to do, you feel it is your purpose, so I guess embrace away.

I'm going to be heavy construction equipment operator. I'm not even totally sure what I will be doing but I'm going to be trained pretty well and hopefully get a sweet civilian job when get back from training.

You gotta have super good eyes to be a sniper though.

Yeah the money is nice. I'm getting 20k just for enlisting. And I've already been promoted because I got my step-brother to sign his life away. I'm interested in the character building and if I get deployed somewhere that traveling would be nice.

don't let them brainwash you with sleep deprivation, constant regimen of routine, and drugged food.

the military operates just like a militant cult.

oh ok, kind of like the seabees?

i have excellent vision and i am already an excellent shot at 500 yeards with just a crappy rem. 7mm mag. i could do great things with the rifles the military has.

well i say i would if they could promise me sniper, but honestly i dont think i could spend the extended periods away from my woman. we both have friends that are in active duty and it is so stressful on them and their significant others. especially the ones with kids.

Yeah there is no way you could get guaranteed a sniper. At least not in the Army. I don't know what the Marines do but if you proved yourself to be a good mark they might assign it to you.

There's no way I would go into the military unless I was going in as an officer. I've contemplated the fact a couple times because I'd like to get grad school done soon and don't want to pay for it... I've even talked to a recruiter a couple times but that stack of forms you have to fill out puts me off every time haha.

I've got a buddy that's in recon in the marines and they want to make him a sniper even though he's got pretty shitty vision without his glasses.

I'm enlisting in the marine corps in about a year. I know most people here don't agree with what the government leaders are doing...but its the military's job to go "I don't know if thats the right thing to do" so lay off of the military guys. In fact, you should all be somewhat thankful that people are willing to go fight. If our government wants to go to war, they will go to war regardless if we have enough military personnel, meaning they will draft. So if its not them, it could be you...down the politicians that make the decision to go to war...not the military.

On that note: I hate it when the 'Support The Troops' rhetoric overwhelms real debate as to whether or not war is even necessary/justified. Wouldn't the best way to support the troops be to ensure that their presence in the war zone is required and consistent with their beliefs and causes? ...Just a random, poorly organized thought.

Anyways, I hope for your sake that you don't have to kill anyone, or do anything that goes against what you believe in. And I hope you know for certain why you're joining, and where you stand on military/political issues. Good luck.

Don't change your mind after the fact and get a dishonorable discharge. You'll have a tough time getting work after that.

Probably from E1 to E2. He is still a Private but he will be paid more for attending basic training and he also gets a chevron. After basic training and advanced training, him and all his classmates will all be promoted to the same rank, E4 or Specialist.

Many "high-rankingmilitary" have attended a military academy. Take a look at the credentials you need to get in there. They only accept the academic elite. Hardly people with a "slight brain".

What kind of promotion was that, exactly?

Probably from E1 to E2. He is still a Private but he will be paid more for attending basic training and he also gets a chevron. After basic training and advanced training, him and all his classmates will all be promoted to the same rank, E4 or Specialist.

I'm actually going to E3 before I even get into basic.

never in a million years could i imagine wanting to do such a thing, and ending somones life, be it hitler or osama, is just not something I could do, as im sure it would fuck me up for life. This aside, much respect to you! i have a few friends highly involved right now so, just be careful and don't let them change who you are

DoorsFan: Why on earth would you want to move yourself in a position where people are dying left and right, where invisible sniper bullets zip through the air and where on any trip the road can explode without any warning.

I can't understand why someone would want to enter a warzone and participate in combat. It's not like you're defending your home town from the invading Russki's, in fact: you're "the invading Russki's".

Why man? You may end up killing or killed, and the risk of becoming mentally unstuck is huge. That "adventures" could have you wake up screaming every night for the rest of your life, and alienate you from your family and loved ones.

I have a few friends in the military, most of them in Iraq(though one is fortunate enough to be stationed in Japan). One friend of mine who's in the Navy just signed up for a second tour of duty. Another friend of mine re-enlisted in the Army recently(he was previously discharged after breaking his ankle). I have another friend who's totally left-wing, and I don't understand why he feels called to fight in a war he obviously disagrees with.

I know enough soldiers to know that they're not all brainwashed or bloodthirsty. Some do it for economic reasons, some for political reasons, some for reasons I can't quite understand. It's not something I could see myself doing, but I respect it. I haven't yet had the chance to talk to any of them about their combat experiences. I disagree with this war, and I have a lot of problems with the military-industrial complex, but I nonetheless have great respect for those who fight for their country.

Well honestly some people just like to kill...and its legal, you get paid for it, possibly earning rewards. I agree...a lot of people in the army are not blood thirsty brain washed killers. Marines however...well...I like to think they are properly trained to kill.

I'm majoring in biochemistry, college gave me a full ride, I think Bush is an idiot and the current religious right is the same as the Islamic Fundies, they will get their share of lead to the head, hopefully.

I'm taking arabic next year and after I graduate I might join infantry, prolly army. By then I will know four languages, have a degree, so yea... maybe green berets?

Not really about killing people for me. I just wanna be there, I wanna see the horrible side of human nature, I wanna do it all, be there.... Yea... call me crazy.

I can thing of so many things to call you but I cannot since this is the pub. The military is necessary. Necessary to protect your property and way of life. Respect it just a little.

And yeah I've done military service for my own country.

I'd love to be able to say i was a combat vet.

No offense but personally I wouldn't be anybodies bitch,
let alone a pawn of the military.

No military is not necessary, its only necessary in world rife with hate and fear. A world that cannot accept people who look different. A world that cannot accept LSD because it may open peoples minds up to the possibilities of peace and love. A world governed by money power and greed.

By no means is it necessary.

Quit it with the hippie rhetoric. This has nothing to do with psychedelics. Its necessary in the world we live in and it will continue to be necessary as long as there is money and power to be had. I wish it was different but its not.

So you don't believe its possible to live any other way?

If I had the belief that we could never transcend having to kill one another then we may as well kill the entire human race.

Would I want to be killed - no. So why would I want to kill another.

If everybody thought this way then it would not be necessary.

There is violence and hate in the world, thus the military is necessary. I certainly would like to see it used only for defense purposes, but unfortunately those in power don't see it that way. It's sad that you can't see the necessity of defense, and instead just judge people for how they should act in an ideal world. Even Shaolin monks recognize the sacred right to defend one's life. We can dream all we want about your utopian world where no one kills anyone, and we can even try to work to achieve that world, but to get rid of our military before other countries have achieved that level of awareness is suicide.

If I was Swiss, I'd have no problem being in the army. If I was in an armed force that was never, ever going to invade another country, or be used to subjugate one's own people, I'd have no problem with joining.

If you're enlisting in that sort of thing, then good luck to you. If you're becoming a mercenary to fight for someone's profit, no one but your family will mourn your death.

No, I agree with defense.

My point is these guys are contributing to the problem. That Utopian world can never happen if everyone takes the point of view 'war is necessary' so thus join an army and kill needlessly so some fat cat can get more power/wealth.

My argument quite simply is that I feel sorry for anyone that wants to contribute to this. Without a Utopian view - I have no hope for humanity, if I didn't believe that things COULD be different then I would think we may as well destroy the entire human race.

Its a glimmer of hope inside that one day we will transcend this bullshit. If I have to subject my children and their children to this eternally - with no possibility of change then we may as well start plotting to nuke the entire world and save millions from the pain of war.

this is too true. i like to clarify to people when i tell them about my military experience that it was a DEFENSIVE military. and that i did not kill anyone that had no intention of killing me. and i didnt kill anyone anyways(thank god). If the day comes however that i must defend the land of everything i love then i will fight and die with honor.

also to anyone saying military isnt necessary well i "LOL" at you because you know nothing. ever thought that some countries dont use theirs unless they are attacked by another country?

in response to the above
if every military was defensive. they would be slowly phased out then some assholes will realize this and try to take some shit over.

Greed and lust for power and wealth, superiority, and control are all human traits dating back thousands and thousands of years. Most of us would love nothing better than to live in a Utopian state of peace and understanding, but history proves that peace is temporary and the opportunity to impose one's power on another will soon arise. Soldiers have always been pawns in the hands of their political masters, on both sides of the war effort; public opinion can be manipulated, propaganda can generate hate and intolerance, and suddenly war seems to be the only solution to solve our problems. Even if an entire society managed to overcome every tendency to military action, how do they ensure that every other society follows suit? Again, it is likely that only military action will subdue radical politics across the globe - because if WE'RE not shooting, and THEY are, they will undoubtedly win.

I don't understand what you mean by destroying the world if there is no hope of putting end to warfare and the suffering it causes. Millions upon millions of people are dying at this very instant due to poor living conditions, starvation, disease, etc but we don't contemplate wiping out the human race because of that. Of course we'd all love to see a Utopia in our lifetime, but human nature itself has proven that to be an impossibility.

Sorry if that wasn't exactly coherent... it's five in the morning and I'm not exactly an articulate fellow.
