never in a million years could i imagine wanting to do such a thing, and ending somones life, be it hitler or osama, is just not something I could do, as im sure it would fuck me up for life. This aside, much respect to you! i have a few friends highly involved right now so, just be careful and don't let them change who you are

DoorsFan: Why on earth would you want to move yourself in a position where people are dying left and right, where invisible sniper bullets zip through the air and where on any trip the road can explode without any warning.
I can't understand why someone would want to enter a warzone and participate in combat. It's not like you're defending your home town from the invading Russki's, in fact: you're "the invading Russki's".
Why man? You may end up killing or killed, and the risk of becoming mentally unstuck is huge. That "adventures" could have you wake up screaming every night for the rest of your life, and alienate you from your family and loved ones.

I have a few friends in the military, most of them in Iraq(though one is fortunate enough to be stationed in Japan). One friend of mine who's in the Navy just signed up for a second tour of duty. Another friend of mine re-enlisted in the Army recently(he was previously discharged after breaking his ankle). I have another friend who's totally left-wing, and I don't understand why he feels called to fight in a war he obviously disagrees with.
I know enough soldiers to know that they're not all brainwashed or bloodthirsty. Some do it for economic reasons, some for political reasons, some for reasons I can't quite understand. It's not something I could see myself doing, but I respect it. I haven't yet had the chance to talk to any of them about their combat experiences. I disagree with this war, and I have a lot of problems with the military-industrial complex, but I nonetheless have great respect for those who fight for their country.

Well honestly some people just like to kill...and its legal, you get paid for it, possibly earning rewards. I agree...a lot of people in the army are not blood thirsty brain washed killers. Marines however...well...I like to think they are properly trained to kill.

I'm majoring in biochemistry, college gave me a full ride, I think Bush is an idiot and the current religious right is the same as the Islamic Fundies, they will get their share of lead to the head, hopefully.

Not really about killing people for me. I just wanna be there, I wanna see the horrible side of human nature, I wanna do it all, be there.... Yea... call me crazy.

What kind of promotion was that, exactly?
Probably from E1 to E2. He is still a Private but he will be paid more for attending basic training and he also gets a chevron. After basic training and advanced training, him and all his classmates will all be promoted to the same rank, E4 or Specialist.
I'm actually going to E3 before I even get into basic.
There was a big push for translators and linguists not too long ago, I could've enlisted for a $45k signing bonus.

i find it disgusting that you and so so many other people "respect" these kinds of decisions
completely unable to see through the bullshit thrown in your face obscuring your view of what that occupation is all about - killing for someone else's personal motives(which they, of course, will never allow you to know)

I can thing of so many things to call you but I cannot since this is the pub. The military is necessary. Necessary to protect your property and way of life. Respect it just a little.

If i was an American and five years younger i would definitely sign up but only for a combat unit. And yeah I've done military service for my own country.
I'd love to be able to say i was a combat vet.

No offense but personally I wouldn't be anybodies bitch, let alone a pawn of the military.
No military is not necessary, its only necessary in world rife with hate and fear. A world that cannot accept people who look different. A world that cannot accept LSD because it may open peoples minds up to the possibilities of peace and love. A world governed by money power and greed.
By no means is it necessary.

Quit it with the hippie rhetoric. This has nothing to do with psychedelics. Its necessary in the world we live in and it will continue to be necessary as long as there is money and power to be had. I wish it was different but its not.

That is why I never joined, I didn't want them running my life. But I always wanted to fly a plane, especially an F-15..

So you don't believe its possible to live any other way?
If I had the belief that we could never transcend having to kill one another then we may as well kill the entire human race.
Would I want to be killed - no. So why would I want to kill another.
If everybody thought this way then it would not be necessary.

There is violence and hate in the world, thus the military is necessary. I certainly would like to see it used only for defense purposes, but unfortunately those in power don't see it that way. It's sad that you can't see the necessity of defense, and instead just judge people for how they should act in an ideal world. Even Shaolin monks recognize the sacred right to defend one's life. We can dream all we want about your utopian world where no one kills anyone, and we can even try to work to achieve that world, but to get rid of our military before other countries have achieved that level of awareness is suicide.
