Properly Disposing of Hydrated Lime
    #7597677 - 11/05/07 08:42 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Ok, so it's great that I caved in and bought a 50lb bag of Hydrated lime for 10$. What is not so great is I now have 49.99 pounds of it left. Since it's extremely corrosive, I'd rather keep a nice big jar of it for use in my lifetime, and dispose of the rest.

I assume I can't just kick it to the curb on garbage day, and I assume dumping it down the drain isn't very enviromentally friendly, not to mention time consuming.... What can I do with this stuff? Or rather, how can I get rid of it.

Because I care about the environment, and don't really want to dump hazardous materials if there's a better way around it.

Seems like burying is recommended. Under moist soil...

um, have you considered posting it for sale on your local craigslist.org boards? I'm sure someone under the Farm & Garden section would love to take it off your hands for a fair price.

Me, I've gotten into the habit of buying "pickling lime" from the big, blue box store every fall when it goes on clearance. It's sold by the pound for about $2.99 in that fashion but they always clearance it out for $1.00 each. More expensive than buying it bulk but it comes in very handy sealed containers and I barely go through two pounds of it a year in this hobby...

Keep in mind that inoculating or whatever in front of a flow hood won't help your bad substrate, your bad inoculant, your bad sterile procedure, etc. etc. etc. It's not a +3 flowhood of magic, it's just a tool.
