fluorescent is great.
get a bulb that says "daylight" on it.
it should read: 6500k
that's what you want.

Has anyone ever fruited using a metal Halide? I have a hortilux blue, (200 dollar bulb) that has plenty of blue spectrum. Any ideas on if this will work or not?

I have a theory. I believe that by taking a regular 12-hour blue glowstick and cracking it the evening after the mycelium has been properly birthed and placed in the FC, the glowstick can simply be placed on top of the container to coincide nicely with other methods of pinning initiation. It looks kinda cool and its just one glowstick potentially providing a whole, long-term realm of assistance to your future experiences.

Any light-source with a color temperature within the 5000-6500K (kelvin) range is ideal. Avoid the "plant & aquarium" fluorescent lighting, their color is typically around 2700K.

The light that I have is a fish tank light and the bulb read "full spectrum". I am not sure of the number readings, but do you think this is good to use?

I use incandescent light, from a room, just ambient light, and of course sunlight comes thru windows. If using a "special" light is needed, then I'm missing out, instead of 2kilo harvests maybe i would get 4?

There's your special light.
Why we need a brand new thread three times a week to regurgitate the same two decade old knowledge over and over and over again is beyond me. Perhaps we should simply disable the search posts feature? RR

Actually, unless you're fruiting chamber is directly in front of the window during mid-summer, it is *not* going to be the best light source... You want something in the 5000-6500 Kelvin range for color temperatures and the only time sunlight meets those requirements is during the mid-summer range.
Below is a short-list of some various light-sources and their related color temperatures...
Approximate Correlated Color Temperature for Various Light Sources http://www.digigo.com/color_temperature.htm

No, it's not, I've used them before and got really piss-poor pinsets. Even though it says "full color spectrum" the temperatures are still only in the 2700-3300K range...

Didn't we used to have some kind of "do these posts relate to your posting?" confirmation screen as part of the posting process?
I'm sure it would be annoying for old-timers, but possibly less annoying than the: is this trich? CO2 drainage methods? What strain will fuck me up the most? Nutrient injection to PF cakes? What is perlite? How long should I wait to see pins? When should I harvest? etc. etc. questions coming up over and over.
And yet, even with such a feature, I'll bet we'd still see a ton of these questions.

didn't it do that for like the first 100 posts you make, then it considers you not a "noob" and lets you post regardless.

I get mine from bulbs.com, they were the cheapest purveyor of rare and exotic fluorescents. In my case I needed a 24" F17T8 bulb that had a 6500K (daylight) color temperature.
Remember you have to match the ballast type T8/T12/etc. as well as the wattage F17/F18/F32 of your bulbs to your ballast or you'll create a serious fire-harzard. You can't put an F24T8 in an 18 watt ballast, even if it fits... bad mojo-jojo there...

oh...
a light bulb sized one...
not sure.
I just use either 2 foot of 4 foot tubes.
the ballast for the 2 foot one costs $7. the ballast for the double 4 foot one costs $9.
quite cheap if you ask me. worth it.
