Question about bulk substrates?? i cant find an answer
    #7597161 - 11/05/07 12:40 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Alright this is would be my first bulk grow and I have a question regarding bulk substrate. so far all i hear is about straw, Hpoo, coir, coffee grounds, compost and i think there was something else. well the question is could this mixture work; 20% coffee grounds, 40% peat moss, 30% verm, 10% BRF this is just the stuff I had left over from my PF tek adventure and I was wondering if it was even possible to use as a bulk substrate.
Also I was wondering if using calcium carbonate in the form of antacids like tums would be bad and if its alright how many 500mg tablets should I use??
If these are really stupid questions just let me know.

alright I just found that peat moss has almost no nutrients so it would be useless. and I think that verm has very little also. so what if I changed the recipe to 30% coffee grounds, 40% BRF, and 30% verm Well if no one replies I'm just gonna do some experiments and see if it works, and let everyone know if it does.

Coffee, BRF and Verm would make a poor bulk substrate in my opinion. I suggest you locate some coir or hpoo if you want good results.

Use the brf and verm to make some cakes to make some spawn.

Buy a brick of coir and mix it with your coffee grounds (search for %) and use that as bulk substrate.

Use your peat to case it.

I have found that adding some verm to coir/coffee as a bulk substrate actually does help increase growth speed a little. It seems to give the substrate a much better overall texture for mycelium growth. I just add a little "pre moistened" by eye until it looks like there is a little more room to move in the final mix. I can show you a pic as soon as the wife gets back with our digi. I do however use gypsum and hydrated lime while soaking initially. The lime will balance the PH to a level that is very hard for contams take hold, but can still be utilized by the mycelium. I have never tried this type of casinge without gypsum and lime, so I am not sure how it would work with just coir, coffee, and verm.

vermiculite is 100% non nutritional and inert, it's the best casing material ever.

PS where the heck do you find freakin Coco coir like would they have it at Home Depot in the garden section or a health food store, I know you can get it on the internet and thats prolly what I'm gonna end up doing since I can't find it around where I live but if anyone has a clue let me know, cuz I have a feeling that it will be a bit cheaper to buy at the store then ordering over the internet.

coco coir is found at PetSmart, or any pet store, in the reptile section, it's called Bed-a-beast.

don't use hydroponic store coco coir, it's generally laden with trichoderma.

Pet stores, it's often in the reptile section. Feed stores sometimes have it for egg incubation substrate, but that's more hit and miss.

How long does a bulk grow usually take for the first flush, if I'm starting from spores?

spore to spawn 9 days maybe, spawn to setting out to fruit 9 days maybe, waiting for mature fruit, 9-14 days.

that's my usual. 30 days usually man.
