The Psychedelic Experience And How It Relates To The Road To Self-Actualization
    #7596819 - 11/04/07 10:46 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I'm not sure if many of you are familiar with Maslow and his theories on self-actualization. He came up with a pyramid of needs known as "Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs." It consists of (from the lowest level upward) Physiological, Safety, Love/Belonging, Esteem, and Self-Actualization. None of the subsequent needs, he argued, could be achieved without the need below it being fulfilled. Ex.: One cannot fulfill the need of safety without first making sure all of one's physiological needs are filled.

Self-actualization, the final need, is the "I want to be the best person that I possibly can be" need. It is the need that is at the complete top of the pyramid. It is the recognizance in oneself that says, "I love everything. I am both within and without everything. I am one with everything. All is one and one is all." It is the force that makes humans strive to improve the world, to make a "difference", to fulfill their ultimate destiny, if you will.

Also, Maslow would talk at length about "Peak Experiences." To borrow a section from Wikipedia (it explains it much better than I could), "Peak experiences are described by Maslow as especially joyous and exciting moments in life, involving sudden feelings of intense happiness and well-being, wonder and awe, and possibly also involving an awareness of transcendental unity or knowledge of higher truth (as though viewing the world from a mountain peak). They usually come on suddenly and are often inspired by intense feelings of love, exposure to great art or music, or the overwhelming beauty of nature. The experience can also be triggered by intensely negative situations such as severe illness or confronting death."

Anyway, what do you guys think about the psychedelic experience and how it could relate to self-actualization? Do you think it somehow induces these "peak experiences" and possibly leads to self-actualization?

With seperation of mind and body, and drastic alteration of the mind, you pretty much skip to the top of the whole pyramid during the trip. And despite the fact that you need to normally fulfill the pre-requisites to obtain self-actualization, self-actualization makes fulfilling the pre-requisites much easier. It's basically an innovative approach at Mazlow's pyramid.

Also, for the record, that was part of my social studies in highschool. The most bullshit class ever, oversimplifying complex things, and categorizing things that shouldn't be categorized.

I don't think psychedelics are needed to self-actualize. They're more like an enzyme that speeds up the process.

I completely agree with you. It's really interesting how psychedelics tend to cause one to "skip" to the top of the pyramid. I also agree that this pyramid is of course not a complete, accurate portrayal of the human needs and desires that we all must fulfill. I like to think of it rather as a rough guide-line that we, as educated individuals, can perhaps build off of. Perhaps the whole idea of the pyramid should be thrown out the window, but it is at least something to consider. The pyramid and the process of self-actualization is really interesting to me and I feel that it does hold at least some significance (if maybe only a little) in the area of psychology and philosophy.

I also agree that it is an attempt to oversimplify what in actuality are very complex things (if that is what you meant). There is certainly much more to be considered within the topic of human development and the road to self-actualization. Really, I was just interested in seeing what others thought about the whole Maslow pyramid thing.

To Boots: I wasn't implying that psychedelics are needed in order to self-actualize, I was actually trying to convey the same idea that you are. Psychedelics definitely DO seem to act as in enzyme, essentially speeding up this process.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate the feedback, it's really helpful. Take care. :mushroom2:
