Should I move to Oregon?
    #7596557 - 11/04/07 09:29 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I have 9 free months of my life where all I have to do is get some gen-eds out of the way at the cheapest college I can find. I found a pretty cheap one in Portland. Now all I have to do is find an apartment.

Ohio sucks, and I don't want to live here anymore. I try to keep myself satisfied, and not rely so much on my outer environment anymore, but Goddamn it's Ohio. Just live in Ohio and you'd understand. Also, living in Oregon I could easily check out the west coast. I'll be able to go to Californian beaches, Washington rainforest, Vancouver B.C. in Canada.... Sounds exciting.

How is it there? Does this sound like a too drastic of an idea? My sister is trying to talk me out of it saying I should wait. But for what?!

I would go for it man! I've never lived in Ohio (thank God), but I can imagine what it must be like. I would probably enjoy Oregon much more myself.

If you're going to move for school, might as well do it early on so you don't get sucked in somewhere!

Depends what kind of person you are. Oregonians are kind of xenophobic about a lot of the people that move up here, especially the ones that seem to clash with the vibe up here. As for me, I moved to Portland from California a year ago, and I love it up here. I definitely feel more in my element here than anywhere else I've been. My suggestion is to come visit, and see how you like it. I know that when I did, I instantly felt like I was home. Here in Portland, a lot of people have bumper stickers that say "Keep Portland Weird." So, are you weird?

Where you even born there? It always cracks me up when people in my town bitch about people moving here, and when I ask them if they were born here, they just look at me stupid. Unless your familiy evolved from a group of prehistoric apes that once ruled over what is now portland oregon, I dont think you have any right to bitch about someone moving there. Somewhere along the lines of history, your family moved there. So what makes you so special?

I think so. Here, in Ohio I'm definitely a social misfit. Don't fit in with anyone here, and everyone loves to tell me how crazy I am/ how much I don't make sense. Really, I mean everyone. And they don't even know half the stuff about me!

It's actually been giving me a lot of anxiety recently. Maybe Oregon will be the place I've always been looking for.

Oh I know that. I'm not relying on Oregon to change my whole life or anything. All I hope is to live while exploring a new place and environment.

Though, I still can't help but hope that the people there would understand me at least a little better.

you poseurs stole that from us (Austin).

to the original poster:  fuck the haters and go where you wanna go.

I've been thinking about moving to Portland myself, mainly because its hot as hell down here.  With global warming and all that, I figure I'll be moving North at least once in my life.  Everyone I know who has moved to Portland said it was great.  There does seem to be a mass migration there right now.  I'm sure the locals ain't too happy about it, but hey we weren't too happy down here when Katrina blew a bunch of New Orleans' trash into our town.

live and let live

As a xenophobic native (Sandy) Oregonian, I can say that I like Ohioans in general, and don't give them as much shit as most Californians.  You seem cool, though, SilverSoul

Okay, I think I'm going to go. But what do I do? I'm a total noob at life.

I think I'm going to search for an apartment on craigslist, hope it's legit, send them money, tell my loan company to send the money to PCC (after applying) instead of my current college, and then truck on over there. Sound like a plan?

I am from Ohio. It sucks here. I mean its got some nice nature spots. It has The Ledges which is amazing. Lake Erie. But so many cloudy days!!! I am originally from Cleveland but now go to OSU in Columbus. I personally like Cleveland better. Thats where all my homeboys are at!!

I do not plan on living in ohio forever. only until I finish school. Then I will go somewhere. Hopefully a less civilized area.

OP: Listen to your heart, but use your head.

oh, and Ann Arbor is a whore.

If you're transferring schools, it should be a lot easier for you. I moved up here on a whim. I found someone I could stay with for a week while I looked for a job and an apartment, and it all came together within that time. It's amazing how the universe can support you sometimes when you throw caution to the wind.

I'm well on my way. I applied to the college I want to go to, and have a course list prepared. All I have to do is talk to a scheduling advisor, and then get an apartment.

I know I probably should have checked the area out first, but fuck it. I have no interest in going back up north.

If you're going to be taking classes mainly at the Cascade Campus, you're going to be right in my neck of the woods. The apartments in North and Northeast Portland are getting quite expensive right now, so I might suggest saving a little dough by moving to SE and riding a bike or the bus (or a combination of the two) to get to classes. I'm living in NE right now, and thinking about moving back south to save some cash. If you're looking at Rock Creek (NW Hillsboro) or Sylvania (Tigard/Lake O), you will probably need to live there or own a vehicle. Do you know which campus you'll need to be accessible to?
