Cactus scabs
    #4070948 - 04/18/05 11:05 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I have a couple cactus that have small brown scabs appearing on the body. At first I thought it was from shipping and they were caused by thorn punctures from the other cactus, but now I am noticing more appearing. They have been potted for over a month now, and have not been over-watered.
What could be causing these scabs?

my cactuses get that too.. Are they middle sections? Im not sure if that has to do with anything but mine is...

I kind of always thought it was new arms starting to grow, then dieing for some reason..

There is no rhyme or reason to them, they are on different parts of the cactus.
One or two of them even has a pinhole in the brown scab, which almost makes me think it is a fungus or other pest living in the cactus.

Does it look like this?

If it does it's sunburn.

Hmmm really?

Weird. I assumed it was sunburn because it appeared when i first put it out in the sun after dormancy, and only on the side of the cactus which is facing the sun...

The side which doesn't get direct sunlight:

do a little research on scale, might be. they are an annoying pest. although scale and sunburn look different but what you are describing sounds like scale unless of course yours looks like the on in the picture. see if you can scratch the spots off.

I have a few 'scales' on my pedro, i don't think it's a problem with mine. Does it matter if only one side get's direct sunlight? Should i turn it 180 degrees every week?

They are growing inside at room temps, probably between 60-70, low humidity like 20-30%. They came with roots and were potted almost 2 months ago. They have only been watered twice.

I came on here tonight because my cactus looks exactly the same.

Does it feel a bit like a soft/over ripe green pepper???

Mine does... ALSO - It seems to be browning from the roots up.

Except for a very thin top growth that is green and very healthy looking.

I have been UNDERWATERING it. A cup of water every other month. In full morning sun.. then nothing in the late afternoon.

There is 4 inches of green top. I was thinking of chopping and freezing it.

I got little (1/16 inch) scabs on several of mine but they are quite healthy, I think it might just be from pests or something, but if it feels squishy at all cut it off before it spreads, and make SURE you cut all the rot out, that's what it sounds like you got throv, sorry.
