Agar recipe question

Hello, I am interested in starting an agar recipe. The problem is, I don't have malt extract. I was wondering if you thought that honey/karo + agar + potatoe water would work?

you could always do dogfood agar
1,000ml water 20 grams dry dog food 20 grams agar agar
or oatmeal agar
1,000ml water 80grams instant oatmeal 10 grams malt sugar 2 grams yeast 20 grams agar agar

The dog food agar is a really good, simple recipe, but you should be able to substitute honey or almost any simple sugar.
Or potato and dextrose is a classic mix.

can someone just maybe outline what I'd do with karo? I have yeast.. I was thinking about doing the folowing:
oatmeal + karo + agar. What are the specific ratios of sugars/water and agar/water?

experiment away.... i would probably do
1000 ml water 1/2 tsp karo 2 grams yeast 60 grams instant oatmeal
or something like that
i tend to put a little chopped straw in my agar because thats what i use as a substrate. just dont over nutrify your agar or your myc might get a little lazy. i change my agar recipe every once in awhile too for transfers so the mycelium doesnt get too comfy with one certain nutrient profile.

You want about 2-4% carbon source, aka nutrients. You also want anywhere from about 1.25-3% agar depending on what gel strength you want. I like mine pretty soft so I use around 1.5% usually.
As long as you stick to those guidelines you should do alright.

You can find light malt extract at a U Brew shop. Other than that the Karo will work in your PDA recipe as corn syrup is Dextrose/water.

Equal (nutrasweet) is a nice source for powdered dextrose...and it comes in conveniently pre-measured 1 gram packets.
the downside is the aspartame, which will, of course, put huge holes in your brain and, even worse, turn you into a Republican.
Potatoes can be bought at clandestine Vegetable labs scattered throughout the midwest and south america.
