i just bought a bible at indigo and the pages have gold rims
i don't really know why i bought it, i think it's mostly for the lulz and so i can go up to my brother and pretend to earnestly want to read some bible verses with him. i'm going to a church on sunday cause a guy invited me but i'm just going there to film them and then get high later and watch it back
im also born jewish and with my experiences with shrooms and acid i saw the ignorance of the bible but now im thinking it's a pretty psychedelic book and i'm just drawn to it
i am fucking weird

The Bible is an interesting read. I'm assuming you're reading the New Testament? Probably King James version?
I read all of the major world religions' texts back when I was 14. I wanted to know where people were coming from, and it was VERY informative. It was also very interesting to see the commonalities between the texts, despite the obvious antagonism between the practitioners. The central ideas are VERY similar, but the frills and enhancements are what the majority focus on as being both important AND divergent.
If we all followed the central ideas of the major religious texts, the world would be a fantastic place to live. Too bad that these ideas have not come to fruition.

If only more people read the bible, we'd have a lot less christians.

Exactly, Veritas. That is the kind of attitude that I carry with me. I also saw the Bavagita at Indigo and I was thinking of buying it but I decided not to. I have read a little from each major religious text and they do indeed have similar core messages.
Dan, that's just like... your opinion, man. I remember after I had an ego loss experience on mushrooms I ended up reading a few verses of the Bible and it was one of the most intense things I had ever read, I was blown away by the magnitude. There are some pretty epic novels out there which cover stories about the secrets of the universe and battles for eternity. For example, I just bought a book called Hyperion by Dan Simmons.

What makes you so sure? I'm not trying to be provocative, just pointing out that a re-wording is a waste of time as far as I'm concerned. I might get scholars together to re-word the constitution but what would that do for the U.S.? If it works..don't fix it makes sense to me imo.

I read the bible when I was a teenager. It was a hard read at times and took me a while to do. I'm better for it I think. You understand a lot more about society after that, also gives you a lot of reference points in conversation. I haven't read all the other spiritual texts like that other guy though. I bet that would give real perspective.

You don't have to become a Christian to come away with good things by reading parts of the Bible. Even to an atheist it has its profound sides.
My personal favorite is the first part of Genesis, the dawn of Creation. Once it goes beyond Adam and Eve it becomes less interesting to me though.
Read some other Holy Books as well.
The Qur'an has beautiful Suras to read and ponder. Read some holybooks, just split the book in two at a "random" place, read a bit, put it away and repeat.
My personal favorite is the Hindu book the Bhagavad Gita. Some of those verses have sent me on hours of pondering.
A 21st century Holy Book should be written based on the essence of what unites the major religions. That essence is pure gold.

I should point out that the new testament is not a re-wording of the old testament, it's a completely different set of books all together. I guess god decided to change the rules. New testament is all about the post-Jesus god.

i remember jordan maxwell talking about a version of the bible that includes commentary with an analysis of various different translations for every verse.
unfortunately the name does not come to my mind, but if you're interested you can easily pick up on it in his video lecture Sons of God.
if i ever decide to intensively study the bible, it will be with that version.

I view each book in the Bible as an account of an individual interpretation of the central message. It doesn't matter then if there are contradictions because individual interpretations do conflict.
The New Testament would, in time, be condensed into a shortened form and join the old testament books as new accounts are recorded.
I imagine the adherents to the old books hung on to their versions just as adamantly as Christians do to the New Testament.

i am in an old testament class, and its defiinetly interesting. i mostly appreciate the lol value, but that is not to say that in general the bible doesnt have some good advice. a lot of it is bs, but i try to look at it like any other story. there are good lessons in little red riding hood, and there are good lessons in the bible.
not to mention knowing the bible will help you when you are having debates with the bible thumping christians.

yeah, really
wtf people... new testament is just a different set of books. But it is much more hippy-friendly, peace and love type stuff; whereas the old testament is more, sell your daughter as a slave, women can't wear gold, god will kill you, et cet.

The Rastafarians have a practice called "headresting," where they get really stoned and open the Bible to a random verse. The pot is supposed to help them see the deeper meaning behind the verse, and realize its relevance to their life. You might want to try it.
As for me, I don't smoke pot anymore, but I do often open to a random page in the Bible, though I seem to keep coming back to the same passage(Psalm 37).

Never heard of that Silversoul, that's pretty cool. I don't smoke much pot anymore, at most once a week but I can definitely see how that could make the verses all the more significant. Tonight I read a little bit of John, there were a few good verses I liked in it, such as:
"I tell you the truth, no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, "You must be born again.' The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear it's sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."

That makes more sense now...two testaments=two Gods...the "pre" one for the 1st one...and some other mixture of a trinity or some other being perhaps for the "post" era...thanks for the clarity. :}
I've been inspired! I see the light! I'm gonna start up a corporation...I'll call it Post-Jesus and see if I get sued by the cereal company. lol

Reading the Bible is a huge undertaking, even in small doses. I've tried a few times, and each time I end up getting lost in the language and the ridiculously long lists of names and events (the entire book is littered with them). I'll definitely keep at it, though, for reasons already mentioned (my favorite being the know how to effectively dumbfound Bible thumpers - it's surprising how few devout Christians actually read and understand the Bible in it's true essence).
Oh, and one more thing: Hyperion by Dan Simmons is a kick ass book. I'm actually on the third book in the series (Endymion), I just picked it up today and I can't wait to read it (but I started 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea yesterday, so I have to finish that first - can't break protocol).

The Bible can be a beautiful thing if you read it with an open mind. The Old testament is more interesting in my opinion while the new is more profound. I'm not a Chrisitan but I do appreciate many of the lessons in the Bible. The key is to separate the old superstitions and rituals/culture of the times and concentrate on the lessons that can apply today.

Now, not meaning to steal the thread but that's a subject we can shmooze on for hours...other "books" besides "The" (one and only) book lol
Tuesdays With Morry was a book I read this summer..by Mitch Albom... If more people made this their "Bible" there'd be a lot less superficiality in the world...imo Not that I'm accusing anyone specific of being so,,,we all have our moments. Okay, maybe not people like Mthr. Theresa...seriously.

I've recently become very interested in the subject of superficial/trivial pursuits, as I've just graduated high school and am now expected to pursue the sort of life that society's laid out for me: a respectable career, a big house, an expensive car, vacations in the Caribbean - all of the things that pertain to the ideal existence in North America. So far, I have no desire to pursue wealth, gadgets, or the like... I'm sure that will change with time, though.
So, could you please give me a short outline of the plot? I may be very interested!

So glad you asked man! It's a documentary of sorts...beautifully written by a once superficial sports writer/commentator who finds out that his old college Sociology professor from Brandise U., Morry Schwartz, has Lou Gehrig's Disease. During a strike at his Detroit paper he decides to go visit this prof. in Boston and ends up visiting every Tues. for several months. The book is a recording of the way this brave, noble, very human, very sweet teacher teaches Mitch his outlook on life, love, death and dying. It's non-religious yet gleans from Judeao-x-stian and Buddhist ideologies. His disease slowly paralyzes his body till Morry is unable to move on his own yet throughout the tragic ordeal his shining peaceful accepting moral yet non-judgmental light shines through.
That's it according to my take on it. There is a website..mitchalbom.com I believe where you can hear excerpts of the tapes Mitch made of Morry. Google him...you won't regret it.
Please don't be offended by my lack of the use of the prefix of x-stianity. The word means messiah in Latin and being that the jury is still out as to who was/is/will be "the" messiah and to many people; if one ever existed/will ever exist, I therefore don't make any claims if I can get away with it. In public casual conversation, I use the term, sure. I can't go around explaining like this...what a nudge I'd be...
Enjoy the book, it's pretty short b/c Mitch didn't have a long time with Morry but it's a matter of quality, not quantity when one is with a special individual. How sad that his ideas and ideals are considered "special" by N. American society! ...you're quality and I wish you a life of quantity in all things you need to be successful according to your personal standards.

So what does the Bible have to say about all of this?
The Bible is just another book. Its in no way authoritive except when it comes to deificient quotes that lack any dynamics, from a Daoist point of view. Some of it is really kinky, too.
