Will this work? (Be honest - tell it like it is)

Hi there. I'm new to mushroom growing. I wanted to start growing, but I had the slight problem of not being able to easily get hold of vermiculite, so I decided to improvise. I am currently trying to get some worth while results using peanuts and water (yeah, not a very good substitute, but it was the only thing I could think of, with the exception of bird food which has reasonably good nutritional value), anyway, when I was sterlizing, and putting the spores into the jars, I only remembered afterwards that adding flour might be a good idea. I remembered this after the spores were put it. Do you think there is any chance I will get any useful results, or should I just give up now and start again? I don't fancy having to wait 3 weeks before I know.
P.S. The peanuts aren't salted. I assumed that the salt would dry out the mycelium, and so kill it.

I don't know if mycelium colonizes peanut shells, but I'd go ahead and start over if I were you. Vermiculite is almost essential in growing, it has a variety of applications. I haven't heard of any real good substitues. Order online if you can. --Oh yeah I may have read that crushed cork may work as a vermiculite substitute.

It isn't peanut shells, but the nuts themselves if u know what I mean. nm. Problem is, when ordering online, the minimum size of the order is something quite large like 5 litres, and I don't think they really sell smaller than that.

I'm not confident that its going to work. but theres no reason to not wait and see.
theres 2 reasons
verm is like a sponge. it retains moisture that the myc canuse.
2 provides a good structure for the myc to grow.

You need the Brown rice flower as a nutritional source for the mycelium. The Vermiculite helps retain moisture with-in your substrate (The stuff you mix up and put in the jars). Based on what you've explained it sounds like you simply put peanuts in the jars, sterilized, and injected spores. I'm sorry to disappoint but its most likely not going to work, call me a skeptic, but I seriously doubt it. You need to start over, re-read whatever TEK your using until you understand it, then follow the directions the TEK explains and you will have success.

yeah i forgot to mention that brown rice flour provides nuitrients the myc needs to produce the magic. white flour doesnt work, it grows shrooms just not magic ones.

I know for a fact peanut shells(unsalted) will work, I've seen it. Just the shells though. And a grain myc was used to inoc. them. But as far as chances in using them to germ.--- highly doubtful. But don't trash them. Start something new and meanwhile wait and see what happens with your nuts.

Do you have a pressure cooker?
I'm sure you can find wild bird seed around. Verm is a bit more difficult for some.
Popcorn is also an easy thing to find.

oh right. well, I'll be starting again 2moz. nm. Not a great loss. Why is it that it has to be brown rice flour? why will ordinary white flour not work? But thanks for the advice guys. I have found a source of vermiculite, but it's a little out of my way, but I should be able to get it without too much heartache. I don't have a pressure cooker, but last time, I improvised with a steamer. Is that ok? (I know it's not ideal). Would a saucepan with water be a better substitute?
