Well, Last Monday I decided that the hunting season in NJ was pretty much over. Yesterday I went for a walk in the woods with my youngun. A simple walk in the woods, no hunting intended...well low and behold we stumbled upon something VERY interesting...
A small group of mushrooms growing from wood debris...with BLUE/GREEN bruising on the stems!!!!! Unfortunately they were dried out. I guess the cold weather allowed them to self preserve without being destroyed by bugs/bacteria. I did not have my camera on me, but I took them home. Could it be??? Did I stumble upon the elusive bluefoot without even looking??? Here are Pics with as much info as I could provide...
Cap: 1/2 inch diameter (dried) tan color...appears to have been white before drying. flesh white. Some bruising to dark...could have been blue before drying...one picture indicates that such is the case.
Gills: Colored as cap. No spore color indicator visible. Gills have that greenish tint similar to dried cubes. Attached and crowded.
Stalk: Colored as cap, becoming blue/green tinted toward the bottom. No ring visible.
No spore print available (they were almost totally dry)
Location: wood debris in swamp. Sorry about posting an ID for a dried mushroom...but who could resist on this one??? (p.s. I threw them in the dehydrator and didnt realize that i had the heat turned on to 155F. its not likely that they would be active anymore anyway is it?) [image] [/image] [image] [/image] [image] [/image]
Also found: Location: Under Pine Cap. Thick flesh, yellow pelicile with white warts. Spores White Stalk: Ring present in most specimens. Concentric rings leading to vulva...Im pretty sure its the Yellow version of A.muscarina (forgot the name) What do you all think? [image] [/image] [image] [/image]

P.S. I know that in some of the pictures the green actually looks more like mold than anything else. This is not the case...the coloration is def. part of the mushroom itself.

So why should we hate you??? It's really hard to tell what kind of mushroom you've found there (the first pics), for they are -as you said- VERY dry. They show quiet a resemblance to dryd Ps. Cyanescens and because they are most common among the temperate zones of the US I guess it's them and not "bluefoots". Anyway, I don't wanna say it actually IS them. I highly doubt that the season is already over. I think it will get warmer again, and that they'll be back by then. Get back to the spot, where you've found them, take some pics and then ask for an ID again. It's way more safe, then doing it on these mummies.

What color are the gills in the mature specimens of the dried mushrooms?
The second does look like a muscaroid amanita.

Thanks for the replies so far. I said the "please dont hate me" thing because its pretty annoying to get requests for dried shrooms with no spore prints. The gills at this point are brown/orangeish. Im going to try to lok at a sample of the gills under a microscope at work tomorrow. Hopefully Ill be able to come up with something. P.s. they are def. not cyans, as they do not grow in this area of the US (im on the central/north east coast)

Here is the best shot of the gills I could get. If you open this image in windows picture editor you can zoom in and see taht the dark orange color is only on the end portion of each gill. it appears that the actual gils were once whitish. Zooming in will also show a green tint to many portions of the gills. Also, this particular specimen was cool because it was one cap with two stems! Ive never seen that before.

I dont recommend these for consumption because we cant really tell and the spore print indicates a dangerous species or a gym. either way, i cant tell.

Again, I would certainly advise against eating these.... However, do remember the spot you found them! When you are there next, water the wood. Check on the patch after it has rained, and see if you can get a fresh specimen for photos and spore prints!
Good luck!

I think the dry ones are armilleria mellea (spelling?). I've seen the stems turn grayish like that before. Stock up on those amanitas!
