question about the actual CASING...enclosure?!

ok, so i knocked up some WBS. went to wal-mart bought these

i put my WBS in, about 2" then did about a 1/4" to 1/2" layer of PERFECT MIX. then closed the lid and put them in the incubator at 84-85. they are building up alot of moisture on them, im afraid its dripping on the casing layer making it too wet.
with my casing layer, i measured out the perfect mix. put it in a screen, got it wet then squeezed it out till it wasnt dripping. "field consistency" i think its called. so im pretty sure its got the right moisture content.
will the build up of water be bad? i opened one to check the top, and some water built up, so i drained it.
should i put breathing holes covered w/ micropore tape/stuffed with polyfil?
thanks

If it's air tight, the mycelium will die. You also have it about 5 degrees too warm, thus the condensation. RR

cool. i'd imagine it can breathe, its not air tight, and i opened all of them up for some FAE. ill turn my heater off. im used to incubating my jars...figured it would be the same temp!

You want your colonization temp to be a little higher than the temp in your FC, that way when they go in the FC theres a slight temp drop, something like 5-20F

Why? 75F is a great colonization temp, and it just happens to also be perfect for fruiting. They'll still fruit at 70F of course, but they do better at 75F, thus the 5 degree temp drop will degrade performance. If you colonize at 75F to 80F and give a 20F drop, they will perform quite poorly at 55F to 60F. Tropical species do NOT respond well to cold shocking. This has been known and proved for many years. my FC stays at 80. cant get it any lower, and have had great success. so RR, would you suggest putting maybe 4 small holes in the corners of the lid next time, stuffed with polyfil? one of them is 50% colonized on top, the others hardly have growth. day 4.

the temp drop everyone thinks about happens with ZERO human intervention.
when a substrate is colonizing, it's producing tons of it's own heat. making it much hotter than the ambient air. when the substrate fully colonizes, that temperature increase falls on it's own, to where the substrate is the same temperature as the ambient air.
see?
so you have nothing to do with that temperature drop, nor should you.
I colonize and fruit at the same exact temperatures for cubes with absolutely zero side effects or loss of biological efficiency.
so stop worrying about the temperature drop thing. for cubes anyway.

shouldn't you use a opaque casing tray?
