Boletus satanas

Boletus flaviporus

This Agaricus came up in the middle of the road. It doesn't smell bad like the ones I have been finding all summer.

It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns. Also he got a race car. Is any of this getting through to you?

Nice pics, thanks for sharing
Might have to look into one of those Canon Powershot A640's as a second camera. I love my Fuji S9600 but it's a bit on the chunky side

Really great pics. The Boletus satanus pic is especially good, textbook perfect pic. Would you agree that the poisonous boletes typically show bluing and have red pores? I think the 'avoid all blue bruisers' makes us ignore some potentially tasty specimens.
Nice sunset picture, I think I can see the green flash.

Even the popular B. appendiculatus (as my Romanian friend says zee butter mushlroom) will often bruise blue. Although this is usually restricted to the pore surface, sometimes the flesh will blue a bit.
Great pictures Alan! Glad to see you are putting your camera to good use!

Great photos and specimens. A pretty area to hunt in, too.
xmush, you will miss out on several fine edible species by following the blue bruising rule. That rule is for the beginners. Once you are capable of identifying mushrooms to species with some accuracy the blue bruising is just another feature to be considered in identification. It just happens that all the poisonous species bruise blue (or have red or orange tubes).
Happy mushrooming!

Boletus frostii bruises blue and has a red pore surface and is still edible.
I guess it is an indicator of which genetic clade the bolete is in - some clades don't have any poisonous species, others have both poisonous and edible.

I love it, would buy another in a second if anything happened to mine. Just wait until I put a macro lens on it...
I am going back to the same area in 20 minutes.

The Butter Boletes I've ever seen stain brilliantly blue in seconds.
