The weirdest contamination
    #7592380 - 11/03/07 08:12 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Alright, so I haven't posted here in a while, but wow, what I just saw COMPELLED ME to.
I was checking up on my three prospective cakes today when I discovered something I've never seen.
So I'll give you some back story:
One of the cakes is growing amazingly -- it's nearly finished after only 20 days and the other is lagging healthily and cleanly behind. However, the third cake seemed to be going nowhere. I had noticed that the vermiculite had turned a bit spongy-looking over the past couple days. I figured I'd keep looking over it and if it didn't do anything in the next few days, I'd call it a defeat.
Unfortunately, when I looked in it today, I noticed a yellowish color to everything. However, I noticed that the top of the lid seemed to have -- what appeared to be mycelium -- white growth growing into the center of the cake. Upon further inspection, that white growth looked like it was moving.
Indeed it was.
Not only was IT moving, but so was much of the vermiculite as well as a number of rice shaped 'things' on the inside of the Tupperware. Somehow, a very odd bug infested the prospective cake.

So, I've come back to the shroomery to ask "What the hell is this?"
Have any of you ever seen anything like this or at least have an idea of what this might be?
Right now, I'm leaning toward fungus gnats, but I really have no idea because I've never seen anything like it.
I just don't get how a bug could survive a pressure cooker or why neither of my other cakes is contaminated.

If I could get any educated guess, I'd appreciate it.

Chi Ro & MonstroniuM,
I actually attempted pictures -- and video (because, seriously, the movement is what made it TRULY fucked up) -- but I could not get my camera to focus on anything remotely reasonable. Trust me, it was the first thing I thought of.

After about a fifteen minutes of attempting to take pictures, I threw it out. I couldn't look at it anymore, nor could I handle keeping it in my house for any longer without feeling extremely 'crawly.'

(NOTE: by "looking at it," I only meant through the clear plastic side...There is no way I'd attempt to actually open that)

actully this happened to me before. but its was cause i opened it up and looked in side in open air. it was like tiny little worms or rice wiggling around and there was thousands of them all trap inside the jar. it was really nasty to look at and gave me the creepy itch for hours.
