Possible Liberty Cap?
    #7592299 - 11/03/07 07:51 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Hey everyone,

I went out hunting for Liberty Cap's today at a local field and this is probably the closest looking mushroom i managed to find.

Could anyone please identify this for me?

Thanks for any help!

please make a proper ID request. You have not provided enough info to make a proper identification.

I'm gonna go with "no" on the lib possibility, but I've never found them and probably never will unless I travel. Doesn't look right to me though. Too yellow, no bluing, margin looks "off".

looks like a conocybe.

whe have to call the expert in this one, make a spore print , the cap have a separete pellicle that can be peel off, if the spore print turn purple-brown may be a psilocybe , sometimes semilanceata can leave a obscure evanescents annular zone of fibrils, usually darkened by spores.
in strictipes veils remnants rarely leaving an annular zone on the upper regions of the stem. do you notice any bruising inthe base of the micelium or stem cap,oh if was last year a spore print can´t help.

assuming that it was actually yesterday/today and not a year ago, get a spore print fom it and check for a pellicle...

like cactu said, u need to provide more info, that is outlined in the sample ID request which is stickied at the top of this forum...

it is possibly a lib, but ive picked tens of thousands of them and it doesnt immediately jump out at me as a lib from the pic...
more pics more info please...
u definately have the right habitat anyway...

from what i can see it looks like one. looks like the pellicle is curled up on the margin, i also see purple spores.
that said, one isn't nearly enough, when you find a bunch more, post them, split a cap to show the relationship of the gills to the stipe, try peeling the cap, and it cant hurt to take a print too.

Yes, that is a liberty cap, no question in my mind. I've had lots of experience with them.

To my knowlege, there are no poison lookalikes, so even if it was not, you aren't in trouble.
But it is, you lucky dog! you need about 19 more for a fun time though.

Thanks everyone for the informative feedback, its highly appreciated.

I apologise for the brief ID request, i was wanting to make a quick post before heading to bed late last night.

I'm currently using the mushroom in the picture above for a spore print to identify the species.

Here is another two pictures, one taken with my camera phone and the other my digital camera.

The mushrooms highlighted in red are what i believe are liberty caps.

Could anyone help confirm? I hope this post makes things easier!

yeah, I think those three you have highlighted are liberty caps. Looks like you may have a few psilocybe atrobrunnea, (google it) I'd be confident of the big one at the bottom being so. Are you in the UK?
There are tons of them here. (Scotland at least)
You know what I would do? I would eat them all and see what happens. I dont think much will, because you dont have enough.

The others could be lots of things, brittlegils, mottlegills, what ever. I bet is on them all being atrobrunnea.
In the UK at least, and probably elsewhere, these little lookalikes are not poison, just boring.

Hope this helps.
