My in vitro mycobag is going to explode ! 2 of them actually .. it seems the filter patches are plugged .. what should I do .. I want to open and re seal them or maybe use paperclips. but I am worried about contaminating them .. they are fully colonized, at least on the outside they are .. any help would be appreciated .

If you have a flow hood or a glove box...just snip the corner off the top of the bag while its in the g-box or in front of the hood. Let a little air escape and introduce a little fresh air at the same time, fold over and paper clip the corner. You could leave it like that and just be careful handling it, making sure not to open the corner of the bag, or re-seal it with an impulse sealer. The chances of you getting contams is pretty slim if the bags are already fully colonized and you do everything in the g-box or in front of the hood...

I am waiting for my blower for my Flow hood but these are not sterile they are spawned to coir coffe poo bags but I was hoping to fruit them in the bags maybe I should just poke a hole and cover with micropore tape? they have been colonized for 2 weeks it was 2 jars of pasteurized coir poo coffee per bag and one jar of rye spawn. 2 to 1 ratio qt jars.

orchid if it's the bags being expanded because of air/gas, then slowly and gently squeeze the air that is in it out, through the filter patch, do this gently, you will notice that it immediately starts pulling fresh air back in...
is it an immense amount of pressure?
can you take a pic?

yeah I can take a pic in the AM .. its pretty pressurized, expanded quite a bit .. I tried to squeeze them but they wont deflate .. weird...

cant really smell much of anything .. I cant get any air out .. I think I will get some micropore tape poke a hole smell then cover and inflate them by hanging them and let air be drawn in through the filter patch ..its 2 out of 3 are doing this .. the other bag breaths fine ..

here is a picture of one of the bags .. it gets really inflated later in the day and the temps go up.

If it was contaminated with molds you'd see them. If it was contaminated with bacteria, you'd be able to smell it through the tyvek patch. Air isn't supposed to flow through the filter patch. Gasses will exchange, but if you squeeze the bag, it would take a few hours to deflate, which you don't want. You want that plenum of air inside the bag. RR

I don't get it. How can you fruit in these bags with such minimal air exchange? Are the yields worse with regard to same amount of substrate of other methods with higher air exchange?

THis is odd because for 2 years i've slowly squeezed the gas out of my invitro bags through the filterpatch, it flows through readily, not quickly, but slowly...
The bags fill back up with fresh o2, and then they pin and the fruits grow very large very quick.
I think I think you've made a claim, that you base on what the function of the filter patch is solely. I impulse seal mine, and sometimes even only use tape. either way, i still slowly "burp" my bags.
I get absolutely beautiful results doing as I suggested, squeezing my invitro bags occasionally.
not daily... just occasionaly. Mainly right as I've sat them out to fruit. It speeds up the pinning process...
orchidfanatic, i've never had one of mine expand that far. SOmething's going on in there.
your filterpatch, when you squeeze, should result in escaping air, and you should be able to smell it, I would think that your filterpatch has gotten wet, or something, because in no way should it be stopped up like you say, and apparently looks like.

I know what's going on. I think anyways. Different filter patches.
I'm almost positive that RR uses the 3A filter patch. And I'm almost positive that Jeetered uses the 3B filter patch.
The 3B bags will almost never, ever inflate fully on their own. Air will readily pass through the filter patch if forced.
The 3A bags will almost always fully inflate with air on their own. If sealed that is. And air absolutely will NOT readily pass through the filter patch if forced.
So you're probably both right and using different products.

I thought you could deflate them .. but one thing is for sure the air doesn't easily deflate out of the bag at all . I dont see any contamination .. and cant really get any smell through the patch either well .. just wait and see I guess not too concerned about it just playing around anyway. thanks for all the opinions guys

yeah my box of filterpatch says "3b" on them. See i had no clue that there were two diff kinds.
RR i wasn't attacking you at all.. I was just saying that is weird, because mine infalte/deflate readily.

So which filters are better?

After reading this thread I'll never switch to 3a!!! that's for sure!
I like the bags I use, why fix what isn't broke!
maybe orchid should switch.

personal choice.
there's actually dozens of filter configurations, the OMC just tends to use the same ones.
the 3B is the "pre-sealable" kind, which I think is BS. the 3A is the classic kind.
the 3A bags pretty much always need to be hung to be inflated. the 3B bags will inflate themselves a bit if you just hang them for seconds with your hands.
I go back and forth on which one I like best. I may just search out a kind that's kind of in the middle and switch to that, because I think both are a bit too extreme in what they do.
as far as biological efficiency is concerned with in-vitro fruiting, after extensive testing I find them to be nearly identical.

so wait a minute .. does in vitro bags have to be sterilized and injected with spores or LC or can I pasturize them spawn to them with a large amount of spawn 2 parts substrate to 1 part spawn . and hope they fruit in the bag or does it have to be sterile to start with .. hmm I may have to take them out and treat them as cakes if they need to be sterile ..
