Reishi has grown on just about every substrate I've ever thrown at it. Hardwoods are the best of course, but I've grown on coir, straw, cardboard, paper, and of course alder, birch, oak, even hemlock and douglas fir.

The local phonebook. At least it kept it out of the landfill.

RR, do you use any tricks to induce fruiting for Reishi? (for example, shiitake takes a cold shock and soak)

No. Reishi is as easy to grow as cubes, perhaps easier. As soon as it's opened up to the air, it starts forming fruits.

Ok, the reason I ask is I have (2) 3 lb hardwoods and (1) 5 lb hardwood spawned with rye grain and they are half colonized.

sweet!  i think the only trick to them is fresh air for fruiting....seems to be a bit of an art getting nice conks...i only antlers on mine so far :frown:

they grow wild on dead coconut and betel nut trees here.

You can get conks by cutting a small hole (1/2") in the side of the spawn bag a week or so after full colonization. Keep the bag otherwise sealed up. A conk will emerge from the hole. Maintain saturation humidity.

in my experience they are very sensitive to humidity. Soon as their is a drop they start turning brown and hardening up, if humidity is then raised it will usually start growing again. which will change the end result of what it looks like.

has anyone tried eating reishi before it hardens up? its so soft in this stage, i was very tempted to try frying this guy up.

Hardwoods: i'm f*cked. [Re: makaveli8x8]
    #7601528 - 11/06/07 07:55 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

is impossible here to obtain any other sawdust that the f*ckest and cheapest PINE. the other problem is chips aren't available, the only chips the vendors offer is mixed tree bark pieces. i'm in trouble. what is the best alternative? pine + barks chips could work? i'm thinking in use a mix of paper and cardboard, ink free pieces.

Have you thought about using sawdust pellets? The highest quality heating pellets are 100% hardwood and no glue.
Check out Tractor Supply Co. if they are in your area.

Call a local tree removal company. Every area has hardwoods. Sometimes they have to be removed from a house or powerline area, and the company that chops it down and chips it, will usually deliver it to your front yard for free, because the landfills charge them to dump it there.

I was having no luck at any of the normal places for sawdust or chips. Sawmills only had mixed stuff, no hardwood only. Tree removal companies spread it where they cut it most often, or dispose of it immediately via our composting system. I ended up finding a place that makes hardwood flooring, sold me a dumptruck full for $150 bucks.

In short look at whoever is working with wood in your area. Woodworking shops are good as well.

Try newspaper, or even straw if you cannot get sawdust. RR also mentioned coir, whcih you may be able to get at pet supply shops...
