Fast growing white/light green contam on casing, what to do?!
    #7591561 - 11/03/07 04:46 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Is this trich!? It popped up just 2 days ago and has since more than tripled in size! I thought it might be myc to start with but that idea is no longer in my mind.

This is how it looked at start.
[image align=left][/image]

This is what it looked like this morning after H2O2'ed it.

And this is it about 45 minutes ago.

What can i do about this? toss the tub or can i save it somehow?
I was actually thinking that H2O2ing it 3 times a day might take care of it.... Will it?

And if H2O2 won't work can i maybe H2O2 it down then cut that half the tub out and toss it.

H2O2 is no good against Trichoderma and other blue/green molds, save that for cobweb and only cobweb. Toss that immediately! The reason it turned green is because that is the color of the spores, and that is now spewing them all over your grow area.

Sorry, no salvaging.

It happens to everybody, absolutely everybody. Unfortunate, but that's how it goes. The only thing you can do in the future is try to spot it early, and of course try to be as sterile as you can. My trick to making myself feel better after a contamination issue is to fashion a sort of merit badge or something for myself. "I lived through Trichoderma!" "I survived Penicillium!" etc.

You can sew those to a favorite jacket or hang them on a wall.

LOL, very good.

Well against my better judgment I did give forth an effort to save the other half of the casing.

What i did was take the tub to the kitchen, ousted the hell out of the air (I'm under the impression it sinks air born particles) and with my mask on i cracked the tub and sprayed in some H2O2 to maybe keep spores in the tub at bay as well as get the trich wet to help dampen spore release. then i covered the trich with some spare peat/verm i had there and then cut the cake in half. and as carefully as i could i "shoveled" the bad half of the cake out and DIRECTLY into a trash bag... that was promptly tied and taken outside.

after the bad part was removed i cleaned the tub walls with some H2O2 and mild bleach water. i then gave the remaining half of the tub a good misting of H2O2 to kill off any rogue spores closed it up and am in the process of preying.

Sooooooo with alot of luck i might have only lost a half a cake and not the whole thing. Anyway I'm just going to pretend i lost the whole thing so IF the other half does make it i will be pleasantly surprised.

ALSO i didn't mention it before but it wasn't greenish until i H2O2'ed the trich... until then it was totally white. so I'm hoping it never actually released spores, and the whole time it has been damp with H2O2 on top of it. I know now that trich isn't affected by H2O2 but it's spores are right? so if it was soaked in H2O2 the whole time wouldn't that affect it's ability to drop spores into the air?

Toss it out. If it contaminated like that before first flush, your spawn was already contaminated. You can't cut contamination out of a cased substrate. You only spread it and make it worse. Bleach doesn't kill live mycelium, so that won't help. Neither will peroxide. Trash can tek is in order unless you live in a warm climate where you can move it outside to finish.
