I think the definition of metal has shifted towards the aggressive pole thought the years. You have to consider the Beatles were considered rock back then. With a broader diversity of musical genres appearing nowadays , we tend to see some pretty extreme genres of music that have entered the metal category ( death , grind core , trash , doom , and countless other types of music) We can indeed consider led zeppelin to be metal : they had thundering drums and loud-ass instruments for the time . But then again , we also consider Iron Maiden to be Metal.
It's pretty hard to apply a single genre to a group , especially when they start having influences from several other musical genres ( The Mars Volta is pretty hard to label, for instance).
I think Tool is indeed Metal , due to the intensity of Danny Carey on drums and the aggressive guitar and bass. I'd say hard rock are groups like... Finger eleven , or Nickleback...etc.
As far as my suggestion. I'd go with A Change of Season from Dream Theater ( for its epic qualities) or Anesthetize from Porcupine Tree ( very progressive , explores several musical genres.)

Dream Theater wise, Id recommend John Petrucci's solo album if your into a lot of guitar work. Porcupine Tree is great, look up Dan Swano and Opeth as well if you check them out. Heres my list, every band gives a great atmosphere to a trip, however it may feel a bit overbearing to someone unfamiliar or not fond of the music. Here it goes...some technical death metal, black metal, melodic death metal, even some avant garde metal! Necrophagist Psycroptic Decapitated Mayhem and Burzum (Its a package deal with these two) Emperor Dawn Arcturus Dissection In Flames Death Opeth
grim stuff man, perhaps my biggest suggestion to trip to tho - sideshow symphonies by Arcturus. Im sure there are some other great contenders, as well.
peace, c

The heaviest stuff I listen to while tripping is Umphrey's McGee. That is some crazy shit but I don't know if I would classify it as "metal". More prog-rock Jam bandy music.

dude tool is definately metal. theres so many sub versions of metal its ridiculous. a perfect circle i guess you could maybe not consider that metal. but then they have some somewhat heavy songs.
really i think it all depends on the listener. like emo kids. they think fall out guy is heavy shit. FUCK NO

Opeth, Mastodon, anything Gaahl is in (Gorgoroth, GaahlSkagg, Trelldom), definitely Dream Theater (Stream of Consciousness FTW), and many more, but that's just off the top of my head. I'd imagine having the Opeth DVD Lamentations playing would be awesome.

No, metal is metal. I'm not a tool fan, but I've listened to laterlus and it sounded to me kind of like alternative/hard rock.

The human abstract is probably my favorite right above children of bodom

Between The Buried and Me - Colors
Do it, it's an amazing collage of sounds. It tends to stray from the metal genre quite a bit, but only in bars at a time. Heavy death metal riffage into a banjo solo, into crazy melodic sweeps. Best metal album of 2007

Im not a hippy. Im a jazz musician who wouldnt listen to metal music while tripping if you payed me.
With that said:
Type O mother fucking negative. White zombie Pantera no whiney bitches that make metal music dream theater(as metal as they are) sepultura down Tool if you consider them to be "metal" I dont fucking know................
If you listen to shitty metal while tripping thats your own damn fault.
Id listen to nine inch nails while tripping before half of the bands mentioned.
I should know....im in a band right now that is so heavy that it might as well be called metal-pop-bop. It sounds gross and thick/nasty but atleast its fun to play. Perhapse the next slipknot....lol
Too fucking stupid repetitive and loud for me though. All you metalheads that shit on phish/dead fans are complete retards.
It doesnt take a hippy to know that metal sucks in general. lol........just kidding

"Metal" (quoted to imply all of it's sub-genres) is my favorite genre of music, but I don't usually like to listen to it whilst tripping. Once in a while though, I like to listen to Pink, and Rainbow by Boris, as well as Altar by Sunn O))) and Boris.

The fragile almost always gets a spin while I'm tripping, it always kicks the trip up a couple notches.

I like all kinds of music whilst tripping, it depends on the mood.
Jam bands like The Allman Brothers, Phish, Disco Biscuits, and STS 9
World Fusion like Dead Can Dance, Mickey Hart and The Shalabi Effect
Electronic Psychedelic Ambient like Solar Fields, Sundial, Carbon Based Lifeforms, and Asura
Trippy Hip-Hop like Madlib, Edan, and M.I.A.
But my favorite is HEAVY Metal like; ISIS, 5ive, Ufomammut, and Colour Haze
TOOL's - Aenima is the DEFINITION of Metal, anyone who thinks different is WRONG.

Sleep, Om, Sunn O))), Burzum, Drudkh, Neurosis, Earth, Nadja, Nordvargr, Bonecloud - most of this is doom, drone or stoner metal... my favourite!
and not really metal, but noise: Axolotl, Yellow Swans, Daniel Menche...

Me and some friends listened to Dragonforce while tripping acid one time. I seriously think it was the hardest I laughed the whole trip. Their lyrics make no sense at all.

opeth works perfectly because of the radical changes from death metal to soft acoustic; it never fails to blow my mind. children of bodom for mindbending solos, and some good old amon amarth for some excellent sounds drums
