sleepy said: Yogananda says that women are generally more emotional then men, men are more intellectual or rational. that being said, when a guy does cry, its that much more powerful because it must have been something really great to overcome his rational nature
That's it exactly. It's really a matter of allowing balance rather than trying to create it. It's not about measuring up to a standard, it's about being free. The polarity exists in all of us to some degree, and it should be honored. A person should feel free to cry or not, and be weak or strong. I think yin and yang scale together, so more than a few men in todays society suffer their own emotional core to be seen as something they're not. More than a few women are either running away from being manly, or rejecting their feminine to be manly. The same could be said of men. All because they believe there is something they should not be. People's egos risk becoming the forms they hate, or risk running away from them trying to be something they aren't.
That said, women do sexually embody feminine and men sexually embody masculine, but this is on a different level. Besides that, neither can be suppressed, and comes out eventually, whether the person is aware of it or not. Not crying as needed can be detrimental to ones emotional self. Women tend to cry more often, but this does not make them weak. It's very beautiful, and they should be honored, just as men should for when they cry. It's a good idea to strive for balance whether you are a man or woman, dominant or submissive in the bedroom. Otherwise, what were once real experiences become acting jobs. Hold one down, and you're holding the other down except on an ego level.
So even though self-polarity is the issue, it can all bleed out into sexual polarity, and we end up with a big mess, like boys who are taught not to cry... because it's feminine... might grow a vagina or something. Some women are afraid they'll grow balls.
Interesting world we live in.

I always felt emotionally moved after I read The American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser, especially towards the end when the protagonist is sentenced to death for murdering his lover. Yeah that's one specific example.
Generally it would be any courageous, selfless act in a movie or a book that would bring out the strong emotions in me.

The most common things I cry for are movies (The Green Mile, My Dog Skip, etc) and songs ("The Heretic" by The Sound Of Animals Fighting). Rarer crying moments include funerals, but I usually never cry for anybody else, joyful or otherwise.

the connection between family.. a sibling with a lost soul.. moments where everything culminates into one point and everything drops away and everything is so clear that it moves you to tears to realize how much pain and struggle you had been through and how amazing it is to realize that everything is going to be ok whatever happens and nothing can ever completely kill that spark of awareness even if it becomes clouded for months or years at a time

Have fun with your medieval world view. As for me, I'm not interested in such a ridiculous, false minded model of the universe. It's boring and incredibly simplistic, not to mention completely ignorant of the incredible range of diversity that appears all around us.
edit: No one is exactly alike, this is the incredible beauty of existence. Each one of us comes into this world utterly unique. The dividing line has little to do with gender, and much more to do with the fact that each and every one of us is one of a kind. We are much more diverse than dualism allows room for. We are infinitly diverse. Gender is nothing more than fabricated social roles. Each and every individual has incredible potential to form themselves into whatever kind of person they wish to be, given thier facticity (unchanging factors including experience and genetics.) That leaves a whole lot of room to play. Subscribing to formualaic roles denies us vast degrees of potential. This is a damn shame, and a boring way to step up to the miraculous challenge of existence.
I agree with alot of the things you're saying, but I also think that you're taking it to an extreme. As much as we learn these rolls of being femanin or manly, one of the things that seperates men from women is the endogenous drugs we have inside of us. Men have much more tetosterone than women, and women more estrogen. These drugs play huge rolls in our moods, rationalizations, etc.

And we can learn (if we so choose) to modify our behaviour so that the differences are accentuated. This produces more drugs! It's not for everyone, but if someone seeks strong sexual experiences, or just wants to feel strong masculine or feminine frames, polarity is the way to get there. Being androgynous, or anything other than polar isn't going to produce the same fire of passion that strong polarity will.

Whatever turns your crank, buddy. We all get our kicks in different ways. As for me, I've enjoyed some pretty killer passion outside of your archaic paradigm. Some people find it incredibly sexy to destroy traditional roles. It opens up such a vast realm in which to experiment.

Yes! Androgeny is HOT!!
Setting limits around one's expression suppresses the passion of our essential nature, and this is part and parcel of the whole "masculine = man" "feminine = woman" paradigm.
Each human has BOTH aspects contained within their potential individual expression, and the more we allow our own unique mix, the more energy is actualized!
It can be fun to intentionally polarize with a partner, but this polarization need not occur along male/female dividing lines. We can polarize along active/passive, penetrating/receptive, tense/relaxed lines...and any other opposites you can imagine. Limiting this to the male/female is just a cop-out, IMO.

Wow this thread is just full of pseudo intellectuals like Rahz and the like isn't it.
Men have balls. This makes us not act like crying little bitches when something shitty happens. We grunt and move on. That's what being a man is. We are more rational and smart.
Women have boobs and are hot. They are not as smart and rational, but they are more emotional. This makes them good counterparts to men but altogether worthless and weak by themselves. That's why they need strong men like me.
Some of the men in this thread need to grow some balls.
