damn aborts only turn black? i thought pins that stopped growing were aborts. Is this to say that on my first flush after I picked the broken veil mushrooms, i just picked pins that would have eventually grew?

Yes. I've posted for years that pins for the first two or three flushes are often set at the time of first flush. They then go dormant until their time comes. If you pick the non-black pins, you ruin your future flushes. This information is also in TMC and GGMM. RR

So after the first flush you should leave all the aborts? This is good to know because every tek I have read so far says to remove every mushroom before the second flush.

No... do not leave the aborts. They'll eventually start to rot and ruin your cake.
Pick the little pins with a blackish cap. Leave the small dormant pins that look healthy.
[The aborts are still alright to eat after you pick them; potent. ]

RR: this is all good info. I will definitly never going to pull another small mushroom off my casings unless I am positive it is an abort.

Here, this is the best I can do to explain the physical difference between Pins and Aborts.
