indoor grow light advice

Hi
I am interested in buying a grow light to help some herbs (parsely, basil, chili) grow indoors and also maybe poppy flowers. I have looked online and at some stores nearby for basic systems im interested in HID and HPS. I am not interested in fluorescent. But they seem expensive ie. more than $100.
How much should I be paying for a 150 - 175watt light system (enclosure, bulb etc-the basics)? Is it possible to get a reliable and safe system for under-100 or no?
I'm not trying to grow anything that big, just 4-5 plants at most covering an area at most 2ftx2ft!!
thanks!!

dont waste your money on the smaller HPS lights... apparently they give off way too much heat in comparison to useful light... if i were u, i would buy at least a 400w and get more plants to fill the space

I see a lot of people downing flouros. sure back in the 80's they sucked but modern flouros kick ass.
I wouldn't have 2' by 16' worth of coverage if they sucked.

I picked up a 6 lamp 2ft t5 fluoro fixture and it was perfect for 4 lowryder plants and it was only like $150 on ebay. I'm not sure how big any of those plants you've got grow but I'd say the t5 fluoro would be good for about a 2-2.5 ft plant bigger than that might be pushing it. An HPS seems like a waste for only 4 plants, look into to the t5 fluoro they throw off quite a bit of light.

electronically inclined people can easily put a fluoro fixture together with part3 for cheaper. i put together a 500 watt t8 (way cheaper than t5) cab for about the same.
there was a guy over at another forum that achieved a gram per watt with cannabis with a similar fixture (4' t8s), except it was a 500x2 (double decker)
imho i would rather use fluoro for most uses because they dont generate stupid amounts of heat plus you can mix and match color temp by changing bulbs (veg and flower with same fixture
