Article in the Economist, October 20,2007. Here is the link

Do you think this is credible? why? or why not?

I know the issues concerning gay marriage and the huge budget have disengendered my grandfather, traditionally a republican.
While he'll never bring himself to change his party, its interesting to see him complain about the misplaced priorities and the lack of serious consideration to our budget.
Me personally, I identify myself with the values I was taught made a republican in grade school: viscal conservatism, free trade, and government that does not interfere in the states and people's personal affairs.
On all these issues the republican party of today is not living up to what I was taught.
Too bad... I'll continue to vote for third-parties for governorships and presidencies, and on the local level if they are available. The only republicans I ever vote for are ones on the local level who actually seem to get it.
A shame really. There aren't two parties... there is one. Hopefully some day more people will vote their conscious instead of pigeon holing themselves into a gang mentality that they are a republicrat.

The democrats already control 2 out of three, and on top of that the republicans will be defending more seats in the Senate and have more open seats in Congress.....
The Democrats should sweep.
While the Dem's sprint to the left, Republicans merely jog.

i love hearing that, made my night
i personally value qualities from both parties, so call me a independent. but this neo-conservative movement that took over America is destroying it faster than any terrorist could even dream of.

Well, I remember how everyone was saying "Is America ready to have a woman president?"....
.... Now they'll be asking, "Is America ready to have a lesbian woman president who lez's out in the White House with Muslims?".

That article says Bush vetoed the bill for kiddie socialised i mean nationalised healthcare by saying it would provide coverage for "poorer children"
but uh last I heard kids whose parents made up to 82 grand a year were eligible and I don't care where you live, if you make 82 grand you have the sort of job that you can get insurance to cover your kid on your own through your company, or you make enough to find private coverage
I'd have vetoed it too. It's one thing to help out kids whose parents can't hold down a full time job. It's another entirely to support parents whose cheap asses can't spare 20-30 bucks a week for medical coverage because, oh god, they'd never make their 2 SUV payments that way

oh, and that's important because it basically ruins the whole article. it's more hope-and-wishes than fact.
i'm not saying it's rubbish, but i'd not be so fast to say the demos are in the public's favor right now. they swept the last election because they screamed and promised and swore that things needed to change. Nothing has. The only thing they've proved is their total ineffectualness.
